Can't fathom doing it unless it is on a 'classic' (express sights milled as part of the barrel etc)

The cost of reboring and the cost of rebarreling are about the same; I priced it out using Shilen barrels as a baseline and Danny Pedersen and Jim Dubbel as baselines for reboring costs.

Steelhead is right: no need to do it unless you have a unique contour or costly, integral, barrel hardware. Even then, a new barrel can be had; Lothar Walther will match the pre- 64 "dog nut" contour and I went with one of those for my pre- 64 338 Win Mag project rather than reboring a factory barrel.

Muzzle diameter controls whether your 308 could be rebored to 338; so long as the barrel is not very thin it should be doable. Jim Dubbel told me that I could have a pre -64 Featherweight barrel bored to 338, but not .366 (I'd wanted another 9.3x62) another reason to rebarrel.

General rule is bore +.250 = Min. barrel OD.

can a .308 be bored to a .338? - Yes - subject to a minimum required muzzle O.D. (check w/the rebore shop)

anyone have experience with a rebored rifle? - Yes. A close friend had his .243 auto bored to .358 Win - and got probably one of the very few .358 semi-auto carbines in the world.
A rebore is generally less expensive than a new barrel, unless you can locate a take-off, somewhere.
I suspect if you have a .308 Win and lust for a .338 Fed - you're not gonna find a used barrel, as the cartridge's too recent.
A rebore is $225, at Jesse Ocumpaugh, plus S&H, w/6-week turn-around.

You need a muzzle diameter of at least .575, more or less. Call Jim Dubell at Delta Gun Shop -- he'll be happy to go through it with you.

I can tell you that a Ruger 77 RSI .308 does not have enough barrel for a rebore to .338 Federal .

I had Wayne at Oregunsmithing rebore a shot out pre-64 model 70 .30-06 to .35 Whelen, and after a few glitches where he let an apprentice do the rebore and messed it up, he got it right, and all at his own expense. excellent service. I firelapped the barrel, and I'm now very satisfied with the rifle, as it shoots 225 gr. partitions into .75" pretty regularly, but I've settled on the Speer 250 grainer for practice, and the 250 partition for everything else, since they'll go .5" at 2450 fps when I hold my face just right. Besides that, the caliber restamp looks like it could be factory. He did well.

The barrel must have been the std 24" rather than a fwt? I was told not enough diameter to rebore fwt '06 to 35 Whelen.

Correct. Even the standard was close, and it's pretty light. However, the gun balances better and it shoots very well. several of the other big name reborers told me they wouldn't do it, even on a standard.

It's become one of my favorites.

I have had a Ruger 77 Express rebored from .375 H&H to .458 Lott long before Ruger offerd .458 Lott.
I had a 1903 NRA Sporter rebored from .30-06 to .35 Whelen (excessive pitting in the 06)
I have a Ruger No. 1 S that was .218 Bee and is currently a 9.3x74Rmm.

Hamilton Bowen handled the projects and Cliff LaBounty did the re-bore & re-rifle. Cliff sold to Delta Gunshop when he retired and Hamiltom Bowen says their work is as good as Cliff's.

I did it to keep the original exterior of the rifles involved. Accuracy is as good as an excellent barrel gives in all cases.

old70, I had the fwt bored to 338-06 and it is a dream to carry and shoot. I have now taken to NWT (moose/caribou) and Alaska (brown bear) :).The fwt was a close call even to get to 338. I much favor rebore on these pre 64 shot out barrels to replacing with new barrel.

Good morning.... Reboring a 308 too 338 is one thing. What would it take to chamber a rifle from 30/06 into 300 win mag?

Conversion to 300 mag would require opening the bolt face, altering the guide rails, altering the magazine and rechambering the barrel. In short, alot of money. Why would you want to go to 300 Mag if you already have a 30/06? Get some Federal High Energy 180gr Partition loads and go to town

I'm looking for a 200 grain bullet at 2700 fps out out of a 20 inch barrel with reasonable accuracy. I know that I can get that out of a modern 24 inch or longer barrel.
Please comment on my logic:
1. Old Mauser actions are more accurate loaded below maximum
2. I like having a short barrel

Nothing wrong with that logic, and go for it. Gun choices don't have to make sense

Personally, if I wanted a 200gr bullet at 2700 out of a 20" barrel, I'd load a Norma 232gr Oryx in my 20.5" 9.3x62 over a stiff load of RL-15 or Big Game, might get close to 2700

As for old Mauser actions being more accurate loaded below maximum, I'd like to know how exactly the action affects accuracy and how that depends on chamber pressure. Aside from lug set back, which is rare, and perhaps action flexing, which would not really affect accuracy, I can't think of what would.
