Tried ice cubes for "exploding" targets. They blow up pretty good when hit with the 17HMR! Only cost is "freezer time"
Looks like a small snow storm!
Got some small cups of water freezing now, should make about a 3" cube. gotta try them later today. (grin!)

Virgil ... have you tried potatoes??? Would have thought it, but was shooting them over in the UK ... they are friggin' awesome with rimfires ... spuds go everywhere AND they make a sweet "twack" sound. We were using suppressed rifles over there, so the "twack" was sweeter!! Mebbee sub-sonics could be cool too??

I save those thin plastic milk bottles, that I fill with water, for when I teach a beginner(s) about gun safety.
I tell them about accidents, etc, then ask them to think about what would happen, if they slipped/etc - and the milk carton was their own head ?
I then immediately put a shot from a powerful rifle, pistol or slug gun into the milk bottle - and we all watch it explode !
It usually makes a pretty deep impression, for training.

Charcoal briquettes for me. Cheap, nice & uniform, and a big puff of black dust when you hit one.
Nothing to clean up afterwards (they disappear quite quickly on their own).

Yep, I've shot lots of taters with the 17 HMR, they blow up GREAT!. Only problem is, my dogs want to eat to remaining "shreds" and potatoes are toxic to dogs. My Wife says no more 'taters.
Gotta try the briquettes!

Didn't know taters were toxic to dogs ... no more mashed spuds for the puppies ....

POTATO: Cooked and mashed potatoes are good for dogs. However, poisonous alkaloids (Solanum) are present in green sprouts and green potato skins.
NOTE: Poisonings occur in people as well as dogs!

I'm about to settle in for some heavy reading and find out how much, this website also says to not give chocolate to your dog as it is harmful, but the catch according to my vet is only worry about dark dark bakers chocolate, as milk chocolate isn't bad, he feeds his lab M&M's all the time. Just did some converting based on toxicities and amounts, a pound of dog can have a candy bar, so my 65 pound German Shorthair can have 65 individual bags of M&M's and be ok. No bakers chocolate though---
CHOCOLATE: Best to remember – dark chocolate, especially baker’s chocolate, is the worst when it comes to this type of “poisoning”. Chocolate contains a substance called Theobromine (similar to caffeine), which in toxic doses can cause heart attacks. As little as 2 oz baker’s chocolate can be fatal for a small dog. If you suspect your dog has gotten into chocolate call your vet immediately.

Note that cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for dogs, actually quite nutritious and digestible.

Sounds like if the skin isn't green you have nothing to worry about, and even then you probably have very little to worry about.

And, Animal Crackers. The Animal crackers are fantastic for taking a little one on an "animal cracker" safari; they bust when you hit them, and they can eat all the ones that don't get smacked.

Eggs - they make a huge yellow mist that is easily seen from at least 300 yards, perhaps further but beyond 300 hitting them becomes extremely difficult.
