May as well go all the way to 6/284 or 6mm/22 or 6mm/22 AI. Since you will be paying for some smithing work anyway, no reason to not go with something really special. Not a lot of real world improvement in powder capacity or performance in AI'ing a .243 as they are already a pretty modern case shape and such. The others I mentioned.... now THEM'S a different sort of horse.

I just re-read your post. Lots of really good barrel companies and it would be hard to go wrong with Liljia (have one) PacNor (have one) or a few others of good repute around here. I have even had good luck with the less costly and more common Shilen Match grade barrels. Some of the older names like McGowan (got one of those) and Douglas (yep, have a tube of thiers as well) were good in their day but I personally do not consider them to be state of the art anymore.

OK, I missed something.... Am I to surmise that Wildswalker had a less than stellar experience with a gunsmith or gun butcher? A link to same here would be appreciated.
BAYLORALUM: What is the intended purpose of said rifle when completed? Deer rifle? Long range varmints? Multi purpose i.e. some of each?

Mark,
A known quantity who's done much work over the years for me made a first boo boo, easy to fix, and I never bitched...
He's willingly fixing it on his dime, and I'm out nothing but a little time not shooting.
I simply asked a question on another forum about it before I talked to him...since I'm not versed as much as others regarding.
Beyond that, it's noone's business........

It will mainly be for coyotes and Central Texas deer. I have a 700 Mountain rifle 7mm/08 along with now a 280AI so this one is mainly to play with.
I want something quick and handy.
I don't like shooting standard calibers so I would like to do something different with this one.

6/284 or 6mm AI would definatly be different, and fast. Let us know what you decide to do.

If you're going with a new barrel and stock, you might consider the 25-284. Fast 75 grain bullets for critters and slightly slower, but not much slower, 100 grain bullets for deer.
If elk are on your menu, the 6.5-284 will allow you to shoot fast 85 grain bullets for critters, slightly slower 100 grain bullets for deer, and a variety of bullets up through 140 grains for elk. I know that you COULD load 160 grain bullets, but I can't see any reason to load anything tougher/heavier than the 140 grain Partition in my 6.5mm bore rifles.

Since he asked for suggestions about 'smiths and components, specifically citing Lilja barrels and McM stocks, I figured that he was planning to buy a new barrel and new stock, therefore the 25-284 and 6.5-284 suggestions.
