Have to agree on contour. #3 is cheaper than fluting a #4. 5's pretty heavy for a lot of walking. Bobby wanted to put a #4 on my buddy's .260, but agreed to the #3. Nice rig to walk with , and shoots just fine, to boot.

Still would go #3 and I'd be looking at 100gr TSX's as well as the VDL's

I built a 260 on a 24 inch #5 Shilen. With the Micky stock it's about 9 1/2 lbs. I shoot it long for grins, but have also zapped a nice buck and decent bear with it. Heavy guns are easier to shoot in the field. I use my 700 TI more for packing but the heavy guns definately have there place.

A deep seated 115VLD will likely give the 25-284 a fairly swift kick in the crotch, regarding both velocity and throat compatibility. I feel like that SA chambering is great for 100gr and under, but loses its luster with heavies. Of course, that is assuming a standard 2.82" mag box. An extended box with throat cut accordingly may help resolve such issues. I'd be going 25-06 or 25-06AI if the VLD was my main focus. My 1-10" 25-284 SA was bought with 75-100's in mind.

I'm a big fan of the .25-284. Have had a light custom in that rd. for about 7 yrs. now.
To my mind, it's at it's best in a very light, short action rifle. You get .25-06 ballistics, etc. Easy to do up cases, etc. Mild recoil. Lots of killing power, etc.
For a long range truck gun, however, I think you'd be better off with a 6.5-284. You've got some very impressive 140-142 gr. match bullets that work very well in that rd. Very high BC's, etc. At the longer ranges, wind is far more a problem than bullet drop. I know of no bullets in the .25's that can match the 140 gr. class 6.5's. E

I like the 25-284, I had one a few years back. 3300 with a 100 gr in a 25" barrel was no sweat, 110 gr Accubonds @ 3175 shot well too. Nice cartridge but just didnt do anything my custom 260 wouldnt so it had to go

Or a 260 and burn less powder to get the same results. \:\)

id go with #7 barrel in 25x284 norma on long action

6.5 284 norma will be even better.

if its a long range truck gun myswell make it heavy and pack another rifle when your gona walk along ways.

I'm confused as to what a long range truck gun is?. Is it a gun that travels a long way while in your truck or is it a gun that is used to shoot a long range out of the truck window?. I know that if your going to be shooting at long range the added weight of a heavier barrel will help you spot your shots.
I have a 25-06AI built on a rem 700 short action with a #7 contour barrel. The rifle was built with the goal of being able to kill groundhogs at 500 yards and it does that and much more. My rifle is shooting 100SMK at 3366 FPS and accuracy is well under 1/2 Inch My longest shot was a prairie dog at 1100 yards.
