I breifly read the account.
They allowed like 3 permits this year for chugach, what a joke. theres alot of bears in there to be able to sustain a bigger hunt.
A larger hunt (ie:more tags) will never happen in the immediate future, not with begich at the wheel and the chugach mtns being in the huggers back yard.

I agree it sucks and wish the best for the girl but I also think if a person doesn't want to get wet they shouldn't get in a boat.

I'm also not saying they shouldn't be hunting them either.

I hope the young lady recovers fully.
If one of my daughters, when they were teenagers, had told me they were going bicycling through grizzly country in the dark of the night, they would have found their choice of activities rearranged...
I support hunting the bears, as appropriate...but running a bicycle race at night through bear feeding grounds is just plain stupid...I'm not sure even Timmy Treadwell would have tried that stunt.

Yep, and I'm certain those putting on the race will get some serious shitt over it. Course the only one responsible for me is me.

If people had been thinking with anything resembling brains, the starting gate for the race would have been empty.
I'm struggling to dredge up a dumber public event in my memory.

If the organizers of the race were also huggers, it is likely they will not believe that bears actually attack and kill people. The girl likely put some faith in the organizers. After all, they wouldn't send her somewhere that just ain't safe now would they?? Huggers there and huggers here ain't any different.

It's like the folks in the 2nd tower after the plane struck the 1st tower on 9-11. They were told that there was no reason to leave, I don't need someone telling me what's in my best interest. Of course LOTS of sheep, err folks, are stupid.

M, I'm glad your friend realizes there is an issue.
I'm not talking about total elimination of bears just a decent enough of a hunt to bring the #'s into perspective. Unfortantely F&G/BOG has there heads up someones behind where they wont admit the total #'s.

While I don't dispute the value or appropriateness of enhanced hunting seasons in the greater Anchorage municipal area -- that would not have prevented this incident, if there were a bear left to eat a salmon in the stream.
The young lady could just as well have been injured by a cow moose in the trail defending her calf from an apparition hurtling toward it at 15 mph. I don't think people ought to get high-centered on the "bear" aspect of this story, instead of focusing on the "stupid people" aspect of it.
Again, my best wishes and hopes for the young lady who was injured.

Dennis, how do you (or anybody for that fact) know that a good hunting season wouldnt have prevented this? Take out some #'s and maybe the bears maynot be so inclined to hang around town since there maynot be so much competition in the mtns? Of course this is spectulative (I'm trying to think opimistically here).
As for moose and bears, moose IMO are far more dangerous than bears. hell, my wife was chased by a cow tonight in kincaid park. good thing the pup let her know it was around, so she was somewhat ready.

Well stated. I am all for hunting but you are 100% correct reducing the numbers doesn't mean that this wouldn't happen. When we use commonsense and think about orginizing an event like this better thats when we reduce the risks. However any outting in the outdoors can create an encounter. Think STAR S)Stop T)think A)Act R)Review.

I don't know that this specific incident wouldn't have been prevented by a hunting season in the area. If the bear in question were a big boar and had been killed this speing, then obviously it wouldn't have been there. If it were a sow with cubs, then a hunting season wouldn't have helped.
My whole point is that, unless it were an eradication program rather than a hunting season, there would still be bears on the stream, and thus running an all-night race along it would be stupid...in my opinion.
But we can't know, that's for sure.

Bears will be bears thats for sure , but bears that have been hunted often change their tune a bit as far as it being okay to be around humans. This goes for the Kenai too. Just like the collared bears that the F&G tracked that were living within the confines of heavily populated suburban anchorage in small wooded lots. They literally were standing by waiting on a phone call that there was a human meets bear incident. That to me is retarded, their is plenty of space for the bears not in suburban Anchorage. A little more shoot...shovel...and shut up might be neccessary, though the sound of a high powered rifle being fired in these areas would probably bring some attention. I know the F&G up here knows that many bears are dispatched in this manner without the F&G ever finding out, and the hassle is far less this way and the opposite way of handling it produces poor results.
