$325to $450/day in J-town...lots of no-go days, I talked to two boats this week, they were just family members borrowing the charter boat... due to no clients. This economy thing is getting out of control. Costs are up so sharply, I do not blame the skippers. What are prices like in Homer, Seward, Whittier, ect? I have turned from a twice-a-year charter guy to a hardcore beach bum! Bill

Cheaper than owning a boat, if all you want to do is fish .

I don't, so I still have the boat. Don't actually know what they charge here, but I doubt it's cheaper than Choono.

I don't charter so I am not sure on prices here in Auke Bay/Juneau. I am sure this summer is going to be rough on those boys. I know a few lodges in Elfin Cove have raised their prices substancally. Not sure it will really effect the rich guy coming up for his annual summer trip. though I think it will really hurt a guy like Butch at "Fly and Fish". Which is to bad because first he is a good guy and second for the money there isn't a better trip for the tourist to take.

Don't charter now that I have a "cost effective" boat.

I believe South Central is running $250 ish. Don't know how captains are making any $ with the fuel costs.

Seems like there are a combination of factors hitting at once, folks down South worried about their finances so not coming up, high fuel costs dinging the charters, and then that stupid 1 fish rule that was rescinded, but must of changed a few folks minds about coming up.

haven't been but hear the halibut fishing is slow in Valdez, one neighbor that runs a charter outa their, didn't even take his boat down till AFTER Memorial day.

cabin neighbor, that keeps a personal boat in Valdez and used to run it quite a bit, said it cost them $500 in gas to go out fishing the other day.

hate it for the guys that depend upon the charter season to fill their wallets to make it through the winter.

I had one scheduled for the 14th and had to cancel, was going to cost me $235+ a fuel surcharge. I can't imagine paying that kind of money for 1 fish. Went on the 14th with a friend, his 2 boys on one of his buddies boat, cost us $390 in gas between 4 of us.

Took a charter out of Whittier memorial day weekend, and it was $260/pp. I was told next year to expect $300/pp.

I think about this stuff too much, probably, but...

it costs me $600/year for my slip space; $400/year for boat insurance; $500-1000/year for maintenance and upkeep; and $20-30/hour for gas to drive it. I like having the boat to go do what I want, when I want. But if all I wanted to do was catch fish, I'd be money ahead to charter five or six times a year and call it good.

So far...I still have a boat .
