How are the new hawkeye synthetic stocks? I am trying to decide between a blue/wood hawkeye and the stainless/synthetic.

I can see no difference between the Hawkeye synthetic stock and the late model MKII synthetic stocks sans the recoil pad. The shape and feel are the same.

I guess I have to go and look at one of them. I really like the wood/blue gun but the stainless/synthetic makes more sense.

we are all different! i looked at a new mk2 (wood/blue), a new hawkeye (same), and a new hawkeye s/s. i bought the mk2 and am well satisfied. i did get a like-new mk2 s/s in a trade last year. it shot well but i disliked the stock so gave it to the son of a friend of mine. however, i suspect there are a lot of hunters who own both mk2's and hawkeyes in the s/s version who are quite satisfied with their purchase. if you like wood, get wood. people can argue the "merits" of their preference (wood vs s/s) all day, but what should matter the most is what you want. it's your money! good luck............

i judge a rifle on "feel" and fit, not weight or anything else. the synthetic stock on the ruger i had seemed too light and not stiff enough through the for-end. i free float all my rifles, and once i free floated the synthetic stock, it just felt too limber. i know most folks buy a s/s rifle and hunt, and i can find not fault in that as they are far and away the majority. but for me, i want something i consider a bit more substantial. in years past i've owned several rifles which came with factory plastic/synth stocks. i replaced all of them with hs precision stocks if i thought i was going to keep the rifle. in the last few years i have returned to wood, so all my synth stocked guns are gone except a s/s rem 700 in 270 win (with a hs stock). just my personal preference. no intention of slamming anyone who has or prefers a factory synth stock.

OK Hotsoup you make a good point, buy the wood/blue, as you can afford it then ceracoat the metal, and replace the stock.

IMHO the plastic all-weather stock is a very inexpensive stock (didn't want to say cheap!). It just goes to figure the blue/walnut and ss/syn are usually about the same price. The stainless action and barrel obviously are more expensive so they skimp a little on the stock to make up the difference.

I bought 3 all-weather MKIIs a couple years ago for like $450 nib because of the model closeout. 1 plastic stock swapped out still working on the other 2...

So my opinion is go stainless and replace the stock as funds allow.

Hotsoup, Deer hunting in GA is my main occupation from Sept-Dec!

I looked at the Ruger stainless hawkeye yesterday, the stock is hollow and I will fill it with something for a while and then replace it, but the stainless part is interesting regarding its price I never would have thought it but I am going to try a .358Win just for fun so I also ordered it yesterday as my dealer does not keep that chambering in stock!

The Ruger Hawkeye also comes in the Hogue stock...very nice free floated and pillar bedded. But you can only get it in two calibers 30-06 and 270..... the 06 comes in brn and 270 in grn. Each one comes in SS for the same price as the matt finish. I really like the feel of the Hogue stock and it's a toss up on which one is more comfortable both will do the job. Oh yes, they are priced $50 bucks higher.

The .375 will also come with the Hogue stock, but it has the aluminum bedding block attached which makes it very heavy but very strong.

OK, Jordan Smith why did the stock seem too light? My dealer has a hold on one for me at his distributor and I was going to pay on it Monday. The blue gun is mo "pretty" but the stainless gun is mo practical. Those little 16.5 inch guns look like a real trip in .358 that would be an interesting and loud firearm.

The standard Ruger synthetic stock that came on my .358 Hawkeye is
rigid and strong. However, I put a Hogue pillar bedded stock on it.
It fits me and the rifle's accuracy and perceived recoil improved.
I did not fool with "tweaking" the bedding in the factory stock.

The 16.5 .358 Ruger is indeed interesting as a "carry" rifle. Based
on seeing one in action at the range it is not only loud, it has
a serious muzzle flash. A 20" barrel would suit me better on .358 rifles.

a few years ago, on a whim I bought a very handy Marlin 44 magnum that several years ago was factory equipped with a 16 inch barrel and gas ports. 1 shot in the woods had my left ear ringing, killed the deer, but the very next Monday it went back and I traded it for a used 20 inch 1894 Marlin in 44mag. Leason learned. Don't think I am going to try that again in a .358Win!

I am thinking that a 20 inch barrel would be about as "handy" as I would want to get with a .358 WCF.

That being said, if my wife were to give me a 16.5" Ruger chambered for .358, I would just try to make up a reduced load that would basically make a .35 remington out of it, and then hunt the thickets.

A fella could shoot 200 grain Remington Corelokts and lay the smack down on whitetails.

CrimsonTide...I should be so lucky to get such a present....I would not turn it down either, but would hunt with ear plugs...
