I'm looking to see if anyone has built one of these (or a Wilson Arrow or 220 AI).
I've got a SA 700 action, looking for advice/suggestions on bbl. length, contour and twist, maybe a bbl. maker and 'smith if you wanna throw that in. The gun will be strictly for paper and varmints.
Did you like it, would you do it again?
I know the 22-250AI would be easier to get cases and data for, just hankerin' for the xtra fps; having Roy's first born would be neat too.
Thanks in advance.

Both good ones I'm sure. Right now I'm gonna go with a 220 case. I'd like to keep the taper to a min. and shouder a little sharper. A little nostalgia too.
I am curious to the speeds of 40-50 gr. bullets in the 22-6 if you have them? I don't have any 224 Clark data but its pretty close to that, I believe.
It might just be something I'll have to work up loads for, but no big deal. Thanks for your reply though!

Sounds like a full PD explosion way out there!

Much appreciated, thanks.
Most of the 'dogs, gophers and jacks were eradicated here years ago. We do have some 'yotes though. Hoping to head out your direction or Kansas before summers up.

Hawk, I've been messing with the 220 rocket since 1994. I have 2 of them one is a mauser with a 26" 14tw douglas with a double set 2 oz trigger and the other is a ruger #1 that was a 220 swift rechambered to the rocket. I just came back from South Dakota on sat. where both guns once again performed great out to 800yds. Both shoot 50gr nosler ballistic tips at 4100 fps average. The mauser is the first gun that I ever shot a .1 group with for 5 shots and the same day my girlfriend also shot a .1 group with it. The ruger will shoot in the .3's. The first year I had taken my ruger out the guide was impressed as it was very windy and we were shooting just inside 500yds and I was either hitting or just missing. He said he never seen anyone hit so consistantly in that kind of wind, did I mention it was veeery windy. I filled the case with blc-2 and filled a 6mm case with the same and I held 2 grains less. I can't see the difference if you have swift cases. I've shot everything from rabbits to coyotes with mine and I can't see not haveing one in my safe. Very happy my pap talked me out of a 22-250 imp. Any question please ask or PM me.

Yepper, well kinda.
The shoulder is 35 degrees. RCBS has special orders for them and so does C-H. I think the RCBS ones are $125? Not in front of it now. Midway shows $142.95 for the Arrow, Rocket, and Swift AI two die sets.
C-H hooked 78 bucks for a 3 die 400 Whelen set. Haven't tried them, gun not done. They look purdy though. Can't imagine Rocket dies costing more than that gem.

4100 FPS with 50 gr Nosler BT in your 220 rocket or AI ? How much powder ? I can surpass that easily with my 22-250AI . Currently I shoot 44grs of W-W 760 behind a 55gr BT for 3,900+ With Bergers 55gr I was almost 4,000. Remember old Roy through in the towel on his first born.

I don't think anyone has anything against the 22-250 AI, but powder capacity is powder capacity. The 22-250 AI has the same capacity as the 220 Swift. Sierra shows 43.5 grs H414 (760) with a 55 at 3,900 for the std. Swift at SAAMI std. pressure and 26" tube.
I'd be happy with a 50 at 4,000 and change.
There are reasons why Roy threw in the towel and the Swift nearly faded too, most associated on how fast and how easily surpassed certain speed benchmarks were.....

Not to be rude but like Hawk said powder capacity of the 250 AI is the same as the swift and you can not sanely push a 50 gr. over 4000 and keep pressure within limits. The swift when it was new by the book only pushed a 40 gr to 4100. We all know how the numbers were played in the early days. I've played with this too long. I'd say your pressures are way to high.
I have a 300 wthby. imp. in a 50LB. bench gun and the first loads that I worked up for it pushed a 210 berger to 3170 fps and shot in the low .1's @ 100yds thought I had my dream load until I realized that the only 30 cal to push a bullet anywhere close, and still behind was a 30-378 and I don't have near that capacity so I backed them off to 3050fps. I'm only a grain or so behind a 300 ultra mag and with my longer barrel felt that was a good speed vs. pressure and it still shoots in the .1's.

I was at a gunshow several years back, and remember a 220 Weatherby Rocket displayed on a table, price was pretty high. I cant remember if it was a Winchester Model 70 or an FN Mauser, seller claimed it was one of the first that Roy built.
