Drawing a tag! Not sure where all of the Idaho tags go, but they sure are not in my mail box. Getting pretty frustrating, I have not drawn since 2002! General hunts are HEAVILY hunted and hardly worth the time - especially after the first day or two. Looks like I'll be bowhunting again. Sorry for the rant, but argh, I'd love to take the rifle after an elk again before I'm 70.

To me ,it is all pretty easy until you pull the trigger and the elk is on the ground

Hardly worth the time?

I haven't had a problem on public land/over the counter bulls. 5 in the last 7 years anyways. Just got to find the nasty places where the fat guys won't go. Most of my bulls have been killed about 50 minutes from my house(Boise). I think Idaho is one of the last great states for over-the-counter elk tags.

Toughest thing: Picking a rifle and bullet combo that all on the 'fire would approve of! Then, getting that bullet to preform correctly!

Toughest for me is knowing all my elk buddies will be going this fall...and I can't....paying off college loans for the kids, etc....headed out in 2009 though. But it sure will be a looong season this year, knowing my buds will be chasing bugles...damn.

The toughest thing about elk hunting.........is choosing which bigboy to shoot.
Not really! drawing a tag is, but do not overlook over the counter tags and public land, especially early archery.

Drawing a tag for the same unit.

In Oregon we can generally get a tag in a draw unit only every two to three years. I went seven years one time.

Makes it really hard to maintain continuity.

You must be on someone's blacklist. My partner & I have drawn for bulls in ID 4 years running. in '05 we drew in unit 49. '06 we drew 2d chance in 49. '07 we drew 2d chance in 48. This year we drew 1st chance in 49. Yeah, I know the odds of doing that are extremely small but it happened.

Time

Partners who are dependable (to show up and hunt)

- aka Dedication, if you can get past that the rest is easy until you pull the trigger on one.

Now that just sucks (for me) Rock Chuck. I haven't tried drawing in 49, but 48 and 50 have equally taken my permit money. I did have a pretty good run in 2000-2002 drawing bull, cow, bull in 48 but haven't drawn a bull or buck tag since.

5 for 7, 50 miles from Boise - better keep that honey hole quiet.

As for bowhunting, well that's what I'm doing, I've been getting a bull pretty regularly with the bow and I do enjoy it but, I've darn near forgot what a bull through the scope looks like.

It does seem like it goes in spurts, I know a guy that drew South Hills Elk tags back to back.

Those youngins can pay there own college loans, I did and I am proud of the fact that I did not burden my folks with that job..They have a hard enough road as it is I know there is more to it than that but it is possible, My folks cut me off at the age of 18. Taking my pops on his first Elk Hunt this year all expenses on my tab this time around.

Toughest thing for me is the wait.

Guess I'm strange... I actually love the part after the shot. Something gratifying about your own kill, cleaning, cutting it up, deboning, hanging it and then carrying it to the truck.... takes a LOT of work but I enjoy it very much. Always have.
