From what I understand, the Mt. Rifle stock can be built with the edge technology. Is there any real difference between the Ultralight edge and the Mt. Rifle stock if they are both built with edge technology? I understand the Mt. Rifle stock has a cheekpiece and the Ultralight does not. Is that the only difference?? Im looking for a stock that is as slim, small, and as light as possible. How do these two stocks feel in your hands? Are they smaller then a factory stock, and how does the edge technology compare to the factory tuperware stock weight wise? Thanks in advance...

Jet,

I believe the Edge pattern is a little shorter in the forearm. As mentioned, the Mt Rifle has the cheekpiece. I don't think there is much difference between the thickness of each....they are pretty similiar as best I can remember. The Edge pattern will be the smaller (slightly) of the two.

Hope this helps,

JCM

I had the EXACT same conversation with Rick Bin before ordering my first McMillan. IIRC, the two stocks have very similar dimensions. I like the cheek piece and I also had two other Mountain rifle stocks (one walnut and one LSS) and both felt perfect for me. He suggested I order what I know I like. I followed his advice and bought the mtn rifle pattern (w/ EDGE)since it is an exact duplicate of the OEM stock. I do remember him saying that there is virtually no difference in weight either. One of the gothcas with the mtn rifle is that the max LOP is 13 1/2 without using spacers. Anything longer and spacers are required. With a painted stock like the EDGE, you'll never know. If you get a McSwirly, you'll see them.

Here is a pic of it with a Rem 600 (LOP is 13 3/4). The bbl is 21" to give you a point of reference.

Call or email him and ask.

RH

I've got two Mt. Rifle stocks and one Compact (same as the Edge pattern). Because of the shorter forearm, I think the Compact looks better with a shorter barrel (21" or less) whereas the Mt. Rifle looks better with a barrel in the 23" range.

Here's both for you to compare...

Mountain Rifle Edge Fill with 23" barrel

Compact (aka "Edge") with 21" barrel

Thanks guys... I looks like a Mt Rifle with Edge fill will fit the bill nicely. My rifle is a 7mm with 26 inch barrel. I like the look of the cheakpiece and since its the same weight as the Ultralight, I think its the way to go....... Does anyone know how either of the McMillan stocks compare to the tuperware stock that comes on the wally world ADL stocks?

Compare weight-wise or quality? Either way, there's no comparison. The first time you pick up an Edge it will blow your mind how light it is.

Jetjockey,

The Mt rifle and the hunters edge will weigh exactly the same, price will be the same as well. The Mt rifle has a slightly wider forearm but not by much. Of course the checkering is different too.

Clark, that SS/Olive rifle is sweet. That pattern looks perfect for the shortish rigs.

One big difference to me in the two stocks is that the compact has a much more open grip than the MR. My hands are quite large and I find the grip on the MR to be too abrupt. For me, large hands = compact while smallerer hands = MR.
