I have loaded for a few years but always bolt actions, how do you know when the brass is sized right? In a bolt I take the spring out and close the bolt and adjust for corect fit, how do I correctly fit the brass in a lever?

Also does anyone have a good load in 30-30?

Plus if any of you have anu other info I need please let me know.

Thanks

Sorry I can't help with the chamber fit question-- I just full lenth size and trim every time. This has given me very reliable and consistent .30-30 ammunition for many years. Consistent length and good crimps are important in this cartridge.

As to good loads, I have a few for you. All three are very accurate in my rifle. If I could only have one it would be the 170 gr/RL15 combo.

150 gr Hornady RN or Speer FP
34.5 grs Varget-- about 2200 fps

170 gr Hornady FP
33.0 grs RL 15-- 2160 fps
or
32.5 grs Varget-- just under 2100 fps

Good shooting!

I adjust my FL die to touch the shell holder, then back it up one turn ane try a sized case to see if it will chamber. I turn the die in 1/4 turn at a time until the case chambers with miminal resistance. This headspaces the case on the shoulder and should make the cases last longer. I have a box of R-P cases that I've reloaded 8 times so far and see no reason to stop loading them.
Your question on a load will have to be answered by your rifle. I've had very good results using H-335, 4895, and 3031. One of my rifles likes 150's another 170's and another likes them both equally. A dandy load I found for my 24" 336A is the RCBS 30-180FN and 35 grains of H-414 which gives 1970 fps and will do anything that needs doing for me.

I have found the Hornady headspace gauge to be invaluable for setting up all of my FL dies.

http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=485

Take the headspace measurements of a couple of fired cases, usually they will be exactly the same or maybe .001" different. Use the headspace gauge to adjust your FL die to bump the shoulder back maybe .002" max.

Actually, in a case like the .30-30 that headspaces on the rim, setting the shoulder back some exact amount isn't all that important as long as it chambers okay. But setting them back minimally helps keep from working the brass too much.

With any lever action it is best to use small base dies and full length resize..Brass is cheap enough and function is all important in any hunting rifle.
