I have been reading a lot on this thread and I notice that fairly often the topic of recoil comes up with Guide Guns. I know that recoil tolerance is different for all of us but how is the recoil in your guide gun?
I have heard everything from "like a 12 gauge" to "gives me a bloody nose and a headache". What's yours like?

If you shoot high velocity loads you will know you have shot it. It can be quite pleasant with 1200 fps loads. Really it is punishing "off the bench". If you sit erect when bench shooting instead of laid out over the gun it is much more tolerable. Off hand shooting is not bad either.

I'm with Supercrewd on this one. Recoil from a .45/70 is very ammo dependent. Shoot the hot loads, and you'll know it. The easy shooting stuff is a piece of cake.

It's not just the relatively light rifle and relatively heavy bullet, it's also the traditional levergun stock design - very unlike the design and recoil handling characteristics of a good big bore bolt gun. Some of the recoil can be tamed with a good pad, but the thing still belts me in the chops if I don't pay attention to how I'm holding it.

Actually, about two years ago I swapped my Guide Gun for the 22" barreled "standard" 1895 and am much happier shooting it. The GG does come on target quicker though.

Regards, Guy

Held properly,It isn't all that bad.It seems the same as my .300 Win Mag in a Ruger 77 with Max type 45-70 loads.I shoot the 420 grain cast loads at 1866 fps in my Guide Gun and in my 45-70 BFR at 1600 fps(depending on temps out).
I think the recoil is overstated like shooting a light weight 30-06.As Rick Jamison said on the 450 Marlin,Recoil is a by product of power...Light or Saami/trapdoor loads are normally quite nice to shoot but when you take the 45-70 to its potential,of course the recoil increases but so does the trajectory and power.

My Guide Gun is ported and I have not found a nasty recoiling load yet that exceeds my .300 Win Mag and I have a couple of Max Hunting loads for the 45-70 in 300 and 350 grains.

Good luck.

Alright, thanks. Would you recommend a ported or unported lightweight big bore lever rifle?

Everyone complained so much about the ported,I don't think they even make it anymore,so you better off with the un-ported for obvious reasons..

I tried to get the front Ghost sight for my ported Guide Gun and was told they don't make them anymore. They are the narrow if you see it in the definition of because of the ports.

Many complained about this and that but in what I shoot, the only problem was with the Barnes XFN..For some reason that was the only bullet that spit copper or lead.Knocked my Chrono crazy.

I've had my action smoothed a bit and the trigger worked on and I replaced the factory sights and the ejector too. One other thing I'd probably due is replace the factory lever with a Wild West Big Loop Lever (the ejector is WW too, an all-steel one). With my fingers and esp with gloves the Marlin lever is too narrow/small.

The GG is a hoot with mild factory ammo and mine is sub-MOA with Horn's Leverevolution ammo. When you step up to Buffalo Bores with 400s at 1800-1900 or so fps, it's very much a handful and more. But I would love to take a bull in the timber with it.

Reload and choose your own recoil. It can be fun to plink with and explode waterbottles vs. make your 12gauge feel like a .410

Not to mention, you can save a bundle reloading for this one.

Good points.
Goodnews who did you send the rifle to to be worked on? I've heard Brockman's and Wild West Guns are the top of the line, but you pay for it. Then again you get what you pay for..

I had a "local" gunshop do it in Sioux Falls, SD. and they did a good job. I've had one job done a long time ago by Brockmans that was not good FWIW.

ive got a ported guide gun and never thought it was to loud but i dont run the high pressure loads through it....most the loads run through it are prolly like warm 45 colt loads cause the wife loves shooting the gun and hates recoil....actually it gets most use as a ground squirrel rifle late in the season when the dirt rats start getting smart and barly peaking out of their holes....even with mild loads using 405 grain hard cast bullets you hold on dirt instead of hair i do haul it when i hunt timber from time to time after deer and elk....great gun.....prolly one of the funnest rifles ive run across.....

My LXR kicks like a sob off the bench but I don't let it bother me to much. I shoot the hotter loads standing up as that's the only way I can tolerate it. I've added the WWG's ghost ring and Williams firesight, nickel front ramp, had it bead blasted and the trigger adjusted to just under 3 lbs. Next mod will be a DRC loop as I think the WWG Big Loop lever is just to big for my taste. Add a little custom leather to it and you'll have a nice show piece that'll knock down the biggest brownie.
