Looking for a decent concentricity gauge for checking neck runout. RCBS and Sinclair are the only ones I've seen. Does anyone else make them? Would like to get one without the indicator as I have a couple of them.

You can purchase the Sinclair unit without the dial. $82.50 without:

I have the Sinclair, bought it with the gauge as didn't have one laying around. Works very well and enlightening info.

I have the Sinclair and it's well made. If I had to buy again I would go with the Neco...a little more versatile IMHO.

Sinclair.....more than decent and it comes w/o a gauge if desired.

Can't work without mine....one of those "necessary" tools anymore.

Forster makes one as well. http://www.forsterproducts.com/Pages/inspector.htm
I saw this after I purchased the Sinclair, I might have gone for this one because it also checks neck wall thickness, but I only turn necks for my 6PPC and I know what they are coming out at.

Also, a word of caution: If you are even mildly OCD, DON'T buy a concentricity gauge! You'll spend more time playing with that thing and getting runout to zero than you will reloading, shooting, or prepping cases until you get the variables figured out and removed! This is the voice of experience. \:\)

selmer, well said. I agree! I was a much happier reloader before I bought my RCBS runout guage. I found that many of my older dies were responsible for much of my issues with concentricity so I had to buy several replacements. Now 20% of new cases are culled (I refuse to ream cases) because I am lazy too. I blame M.D. for my excessive concern over concentricity, it was his writing that caused it.

I have the RCBS and don't have any complaints. I check every round I load and it only takes seconds. I've also had good luck correcting run-out by sticking the bullet into a hole applying a small amount of force. It can be a hole drilled in wood metal etc. Some think this wil ruin a load, but I've had excellent results after straightening rounds(Sub 1/2 moa results).

The RCBS was only around 87 bucks when I purchased it a few years back. have no idea what they are running now. I've rolled too many to remeber in that rig and it's held up fine.

Good Luck

Reloader7RM, describe this "straightening" process in more detail. It is as crude as you're making it sound. \:\) I'm thinking I could use my Sinclair bullet comparator if I ever found this to be necessary...

There was a good thread on this back a bit. Yes, it sounds crude but with a little playing with it you'll find you can get the runout down below .001 without issues. Here's the thread:

Sinclair gauge and its use

Panhandle: I have and enjoy very much the NECO Concentricity Gauge.
I highly recommend it to you.
I am attempting to link you to their site so you can see what all this gauge does and what it looks like.

Best of luck with whichever model you choose.

A (good) friend made me this one for the cost of the components.

Selmer is right. If you are remotely OCD, a concentricity gauge will drive you nuts. It will cause you frustration, anger, loss of sleep, depression, and tons of money buying more tools and replacing dies. With all that said, I couldn't live without one. With the exception of my press, it's the most important tool on my bench.

Did he include his lathe in that cost?

Selmer,

I use this process to correct slightly non-concentric rounds. It's useless for really bad rounds, but you shouldn't have any really bad ones when using good tools.

If I'm loading for one of my paper punchers, I prefer less than .002 run-out(Preferably less than .001). I roll the rounds on the gauge and all rounds that are over my acceptable level I place a mark with a sharpie on the high point. Then I take whatever I have(sometimes old brass)with the proper hole just large ebough to get the bullet in down to the case mouth and apply a small force opposing the high mark. Then, roll it on the gauge. It takes a very short time to do this and it works great.

If the round is bad out of line, this can hurt neck tension, but you'd be surprised how much you can correct.

It will take a few test rounds to get the feel of this method and it may be frustrating at first, but it is a snap and quite useful.

Some may feel that is a bad way to straighten rounds, all I can say is that it has worked very well for me.

Good Luck

The only problem I had with this method was if I played with it much I actually had bullets come out so I wondered how I was affecting neck tension. I mark mine the same way but now slid a small piece of aluminum with a hole in it over the neck and tweak the neck a little vice the bullet.

I'll try it, but I'd rather correct the cause of the problem rather than the symptom, but if it works, it works. I'll give it a go, thanks for the concise explanation.

I often considered this product, but my reloads much improved after going to inline wilson dies with arbor press.

Thanks for all your inputs. Looks like I really have to get one and have to do some research now to decide which one. Thanks again.
