.270 vs 30.06....which will travel further distance

Ok, this might not be of any real value, but a buddy and I had a debate after a couple cold beers.
All things being equal (or as equal as possible) which cal will shoot further.
If the bullet was the same weight (150gr) and fired out of similar rifles that were just chambered different, what one would go the longest distance.
I understand that the .270 is a flatter shooter. I understand that the .270 should be more aero dynamic than the 30.06, but wouldn't the standard factory load have a hotter load in the 30.06....would that hotter load be able to overcome the aero gain that the .270 has.
I have heard of a chart that shows the caliber, weight and angle and gives a distance, but I have not seen it.

No contest, 270. The higher BC (assuming similar shape of course) of the .277 bullet will trump the extra velocity of the 30-06 very quickly and never look back.

I just quickly looked into an older reloading manual. The speer data had the .30-06 with the 150 grain bullet (BC .42) leaving at an average of 2900, with a velocity of 1891 at 500 yards. The .270, with a 150 grain bullet ( BC .48 ) left at an average of 2700 fps, and had a velocit of 1830 at 500 yards.
Just from that quick reference, the .30-06 would be out in front at the end of the race. Two different style of bullets could give completly different results. Maybe in reality, its too close to call?

If 'all things being equal' means same muzzle velocity and same bullet weight, then JonA is on the money - the .270 must win because higher BC = less drag = more distance.

Drop, energy at 500 yds? Where are you seeing that in his question? He asked which would shoot farther. Tell me, which has more drop at two miles?

A 270 will shoot a .496 BC 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip at around 2900 fps, and the 30-06 will shoot the .490 BC 168 grain Ballistic Silvertip at 2900 fps.
That's all well and good, but what does it have to do with the question?

Secondly,
They have the same case capacity, which means they'll shoot bullets of similar BCs at similar velocities.
It doesn't mean that. There's no such law, relationship, or even rule of thumb to this effect. For a rule of thumb, when case capacity is held constant, the exterior ballistic advantage will always go to the smaller caliber.
338 Federal vs. 260? 375 Taylor vs. 264 WM? While the extremes illustrate it more colorfully, the differences are still there with closer comparisons when bullet makers give comparable offerings for each, such as comparing the 308 to 7-08, then the 7-08 to 260....
But again, the actual question he asked was even less fair, keeping the weight the same. Like I said, no contest.

Y'all need to interview a couple of big game animals hit at similar ranges with each of these rifles and see what they'd say the difference was. Since they'd both likely be dead, their lack of an answer would provide all the information you'd likely need.
My go-to hunting rig is a 30'06 and even O'Connor said it was more versatile. Even so, I'm in the process of building a 270 WCF right now and it'll likely get a whole lotta field time once complete.
They're two cartridges that are super hard to beat at long or short range. Enough punch to make a 400 yard shot possible, but not so much recoil that they beat the living snot out of you as you practice for such an eventuality.

JonA got me, I didn't read the post as clearly as I should have. As for which will shoot FURTHER? I don't have a clue, it's not necessarily a practical question...but it is entertaining in the off-season.

All things being equal the 30 06 should start out about 150 fps faster though have a slightly lower BC hence the 270 shooting the furthest, IMO.
