What's a reasonable amount to pay for an older one in very good to excellent condition? Thanks.

I'd not give more than $220 for one of the old gloss 6x42's. A bit more for a nice matte specimen.

Some of the older M8's were single coated, not fully multicoated. Even some of the older 6X42's were so made.
I can't see myself paying much over a $150 for a single coated Leupold scope. E

I paid $160 (shipped) for a nearly pristine 6x36 a few years ago....

Do you know what year they changed from single coat to mutlicoated? In other words, could you tell from the serial number?

from Leupold's answer guide:

Multi-Coat 4
A special, high transmission lens coating introduced on selected Leupold optics in 1990. The use of MC4 coating will increase light transmission in a rifle scope by 8% to 10%. This coating is featured on all Leupold Vari-X III and Mark 4 models as well as selected M8's. On these models, all lens surfaces are coated with MC4 to give the maximum light transmission and low light performance.

When was multicoat 4 lens coating added to the M8-6x42mm?
The M8-6x42mm scope was introduced in 1986. Multicoat 4 lens coating was added to the scope starting in 1990

Beginning in 1974, Leupold began letter coding riflescope serial numbers. All scopes produced during that year had the letter E as a prefix to the serial number. The next year the letter code was advanced to F, and so on through the alphabet. The letters I,O, and Q, were skipped so that they wouldn't be confused with numbers. When we reached Z in 1992 we started over at the beginning of the alphabet with letter A. as a suffix. At this writing, in 2006, we are using letter code P.

So it sounds like a prefix of X=1990, Y=1991, Z=1992 or a serial number with a leter suffix should be MC4.

send an email to Leupold with the serial number and they will tell you for sure.
