My son has been working in the Ninth Ward while he's home on vacation building stuff with Habitat for Humanity, and he's been working with a group of Canadians who drove all the way down to help out. He's having a blast, translating local culture for our friends from the great white North, who even worked on Canada Day, eh? We're trying to get them to all come over to the house and swim for the Fourth of July.
They are having a little trouble dealing with the heat and humidity of New Orleans in July, but got rained out early today and didn't seem too sad about it.
We appreciate the help from our northern brethren.

Sam,
we have plenty of work available if any Gainesville folks care to join in ... how about stepping up and leading by example
We already know how much you love New Orleans
Steve could hook you up with a spare bedroom and I'll throw in some Monte Cristos

Some friends of mine from Canada were among a church group who went to NO in the months after the storm at their own expense, flights, hotels, food etc, and volunteered a lot of general reconstruction labour. They enjoyed themselves but were concerned and dismayed by the apathy of many of the black population in that neighborhood who simply sat around and watched them while they reconstructed houses. Apparently those residents expected that others should clean up the mess for them.
While they were working there, their rental bus was broken into and many lost their cameras, laptops and other personal belongings.

bushrat - That is an excellent observation of exactly why it's taking them so long to rebuild. I'm surprised that they left the bus...

from smartphone: bushrat, I,m sorry for your friend's loss and am embarrassed as a US citizen.
While the Iowa floods did not devastate a mega city like NO, people weren't sitting on their rooftops waiting to be rescued either, nor were there roving bands of thugs or looting.
All cultues are not equal.
Thanks to our northern friends for any and all help. Gdv

they didn't have to, a river flood happens in slow motion compared to a hurricane. that's why 1500 people drowned here. Last I heard it was five in Iowa.

Steve,
Point taken and the concentration of people in NO and environs certainly added to the human misery but here in Iowa I saw and heard, "I am responsible to and for myself for making the best out of a terrible situation, and helping my neighbor also"
I'm sure that took place in NO also but of course the media highlighted the other.

you're right about the media.....more than 1.2 million people were displaced by the storm....there were about 20,000 in the Superdome.
that 2% got about 90% of the media attention.
the rest of us just did what we needed to do, before, during and after. I'm sure most Iowa folks do the same.

If NO heat & humidity is anything like Houston, I don't know how those guys managed to work at all in it. That's brutal. I'd rather work in -15șC any day, compared to that.

AHHH!
NOW - we know why the invite over to the pool for a dip. And here I was thinking - "Boy, that SteveNO - What a guy!" Inviting some Canucks over to his place as a reward for putting all that sweat-equity into the Ninth Ward.
It must be a humbling experience for some of the local big men being out-worked and out-thought by some Canuck women - eh?
Oh well, even if your offer for the pool isn't quite as altruistic as was first reported - it IS a great gesture.
We should always help neighbors - as was pointed out - it's what neighbors do.

Well, my boy just left with the four Canadian hotties, headed for dinner in the Quarter and then the music clubs in the Fauburg Marigny.......
What a grin he was wearing.....you could see he was thinking...."What a great country, just me and these four blondes", eh?
they're really very nice girls, all social workers right out of college, and besides the Habitat stuff they're doing counseling work through some church ministry....as you might expect we have a large, and largely untreated mentally ill population since so many hospitals have closed and shrinks left town.

G-man....I grew up in Houston...New Orleans is a little worse, but only a local would notice. We're more humid, being completely surrounded by the lake, the river, the marshes and the gulf. Temps are about the same.
