JJ,
I know before you left for Africa this season you were looking for a new spotting scope. I wasn't sure if it was for use in Africa or if it was for other hunting here in NA. Can you tell us what scope you ended up deciding on and how and what you use it for in Africa, if you do? Was size and weight a deciding factor, or was it simply optics quality vs. price that factored into your decision?

Thanks,
Test

It was not for RSA. I did buy a Nikon with the high end coatings. I don't recall the model now, but it was high end, listing for way over a grand. It was not one of the 299.00 Nikon models.

I chose it based on looking through a number of them, and coming down to the Swarovski, Leupold and this Nikon. I'm not exactly brand loyal to any extent and would prefer the performance over the name on the product. I have a long relationship with Leupold, but the this particular Nikon was far superior, especially with the specific lens this scope has. Okay I just remembered it's a Nikon Fieldscope with the ED lens. I used one at a shooting range and compared it to my buddies Swarovski. Both have a similiar list price, but the Swaro is never on sale and never on a close out. I found this Nikon for about 1/2 list price and could not pass it up.

It's got brilliant optics and superb quality. I don't feel slighted in the least that it's not a Swarovski. I'm not even sure that if I could have either for the same price I would take the Swaro! I used them side by side at the range and looked at the same things. It was not possible for me to see any difference in them. I think that the "ED" glass in the nikon closes the gap in optics quality quite a bit. I think the Nikon, feels more heavy duty as well. That's a gut opinion, not anything I would state as a fact.

Thanks for the info JJ. I wasn't sure how you might use a spotter in RSA, but I certainly don't have much experience over there.
