i would think 30-06 since the action is scaled to the cartridge, but the .308's seem to fetch a little more money. speaking of featherweight specifically. i can't decide which to get.

For a collector I think the 308, since I believe the Featherweight and the 308 chambering came out at the same time. I have an original advertising flyer that appears to announce both.

For a user, I think the 30-06 would be preferred, since both are long action anyway.

....I think the rarest pre 64 FW Super Grade is the 308 chambering.Overall there are more 30/06's out there;pretty sure.

A 308 is far more desirable than a 30-06. I believe 75%+ of all pre-64s made were in 30-06 and 270 Win. 308s are rare.

The actions are the same length on both of them, the difference is the magazine box and bolt stop. The .308 was only available in the Featherwieght model, they made 1 oe 2 standard wieght 308's but they are BIG, BIG $$'s!

As for desireability it's up to you. Niether one is really going to be worth more than the other. In these caliber Featherwieghts condition trumps caliber as far as price.

far more 30-06s were made than the 308, so from a selection availability standpoint the 308 would be more desirable. the price on the 06's would be less than a 308 (all other things except caliber being equal).

The Featherweight Supergrade in 308 is the rarest of the rare. Beware of fakes. jorge

jorgeI, rarest of the rare is a loaded opinion. A 308 standard weight is many, many times rarer than a 308 SG Feaherweight.

As for fakes I often hear that but has anybody ever seen or actually heard of a fake SG Featherweight? Where would you ever get a SG Featherweight stock to fake one?

The standard weight 308 is indeed more rare...

I have seen a fake SG FW with in the last year at a gun show in Atlanta... You can buy a SG replacement stock for a pre-64 from gunstocks.com & they have them from time to time... then all you need is a floor plate... Always check the barrel to see if it is marked with a "S"....

The reason I say it was a fake is the wood did not match anything I had ever seen on a 70... Way way to pretty a piece of wood & tons of figure... & the color was off.... & the checkering was too nice...

I to have seen SG stocks for sale but I have never seen or heard of a SG Featherweight stock for sale. I guess a guy could fill the "doughnut hole" area of a standard SG stock and throw a Featherweight barreled action in it but if you don't see it ASAP you have no business buying a collector grade M70, or anything else!

The "S" on the barrel isn't always there either, even on legitamite M70 SG's. Pretty much the only thing constant on M70's is that there isn't much consistant!

Since I'm NOT a "collector", but rather a hunter/shooter... I'd opt for the .30/06 since it will do ANYTHING a .308 will do... only the .30/06 will do it BETTER... and at a lower chamber pressure !!!

I've never really completely understood the mentality that "buys into" this business of having a tiny, ½ inch shorter bolt-throw in the .308 compared to the .30/06 as being a "BIG DEAL".

The .308 Winchester is, in truth, a .300 Savage cartridge ("THE" original "short, fat cartridge" introduced by Arthur Savage in his famous Model 99 in 1920) made more powerful by increasing the chamber pressure from 46,000 CUP (the .300 Savage) to about 53,000 CUP (the .308 Win.).

Small wonder it "kicks" harder, as some Model 99 Savage owners who own both calibers in their favorite rifle complain, eh?

If the .30/06 (at 50,000 CUP) was pushed as hard as the .308, it would be the equal of a .300 H&H Magnum !!!

It isn't that I "dislike" the .308 Winchester... it's just that I don't understand the fascination with it, especially when compared to the obviously superior .30/06 Springfield cartridge.

Buttttttttt... heyyyyyyyy, this is "the STUFF" that makes for "hoss races", eh? \:\)

Pretty much my thoughts on the matter, too. If I'm going to get a .308 I'm going to get it in a short action - not because the weight savings is great or the bolt throw is less (both a big "HO-HUM" to me) but simply because as an engineering type I appreciate a design more suited to task.

Collecting aside if the rifle is to use then the 30-06 fills up the action. The only reason that I would select the 308 in a pre 64 Featherweight is if it cost less. I paid $400 for the 308 with a scope.

I happen to have both rifles. I use the 308 in VT for woods hunting as the cartridge is more than enough at woods ranges.

Here is a buck taken with the old M70 308 and dragged all the way back to the camp.

Tell us what the unit will be used for and perhaps we can be a bit more informative.
