I'm about to purchase a new air rifle, probable a 22 caliber discovery. Are silencers legal on air rifles? If they are legal, how effective are they?

A suppressor, regardless of usage, is a controlled piece of equipment. Thus, it doesn't matter what you want to attach it to, if anything at all, you still have go through the Form-4 and tax issues.....

Suppressors are definitely a no-no but I did see a Gamo ad with a new "noise dampener". Not sure how it works or why it would be kosher but here's a link if anyone's interested.....

A suppressor is defined as a device for muffling a firearm. An air rifle does not meet the definition of firearm in those statutes.

A suppressor, designed exclusively for an airgun and not capable of being used on a firearm, is legal without a Form 4 and applicable tax. The key being not useable on a firearm.

An airgun with a permanently attached suppressor is legal and unrestricted as far as the Feds are concerned. A detachable airgun suppressor that will not work on a firearm is also OK. State and local laws may say otherwise.

Check out the ATF website for more information.

That would be an integral suppressor and legal because an airgun does not meet the definition of a firearm in the statute.
