25-06 or 30-06? Or is it a toss-up?

I have my 25-06 that gave me success last year, but now have a 26" barreled 30-06 as well. At 200 to 400 yards I don't see a worthwhile difference on paper, is there one in the field?

Only if YOU can shoot one more accurately than the other. On deer you won't see a whole lot of difference, then again, I don't see a whole lot of difference between a .243 with 100 gr. Partitions and a .30-06 with 165 gr. Ballistic Tips at those ranges either, they both put deer on the ground when I place the bullet in the boiler room. And I've been the guy behind both guns. Put the bullet where it needs to be and don't worry about it. Just don't use a 75 gr. pill at 3500 fps out of the .25-06, use at least 100 gr, 125 or 120 would be even better and hit harder at long range. Selmer

Dino, I have and use both. I started with a Rem M700 .30-06 w/22” barrel and killed a lot of deer and a couple elk with it. But this rifle has not been on the hill in 10 years. Why you might ask? Well it’s because I have a couple of .257 caliber rifles, several .277 caliber rifles and a couple of .308 caliber rifles that shot ring around my old .30-06. On paper, if you have an accurate .25-06 and .30-06, you will not see a lot difference. On deer size game at less than 400 yards you will not see a lot difference. On game larger than deer you will see a lot difference.

I have both and both will do fine for whitetail.
Although not a very scientific test, It does seem to me that the 30-06 seems to do alittle more internal damage with similar bullets and medium sized deer seem to cover less ground after impact. Same goes for the deer I've taken with a 6mm when compared to the 25-06.
Whether small or large cal, they will all kill deer very effectively, but I can remember quite a few long trailing jobs on lung shot deer with the small cals. Like I said, nothing scientific, but I've killed quite a few and that's my experience. Wouldn't hesitate to use either for a second. Would actually choose the .257 for the longer pokes.
Good Luck

I have them both and have killed plenty of deer with both including body weights on above 200 lbs live weight. I shoot 120 Speer in the .25 and 180 Partitions in the .30. The .30 makes a bigger hole but may not necessarily bloodshot more meat. I prefer the 180's since the 150 and 165's are "too small" and the Partition since I want "penetration". The 120 Speer will shoot right through them, even at very close range. Note that the comparisons and contrasts don't necessarily make much sense. What it comes down to is my experiences with each. They both work very well and I like each of them. I use them both because I want to do so. Sometimes I want to try a "new rifle" or "change my luck". If you have an outside chance of hunting larger animals, the .30 would be the choice with preference if you plan to have only 1 gun.

I have hunted with a .25-06 for many years and both of my hunting buddies use .30-06. I usually shoot 100g bullets as fast as I can and they both shoot 150g bullets. We both shoot cup and core bullets(although I used GS Custom 100g last year). A sample of probably 20 whitetails, I could not tell a difference between the kills with either.
Both calibers create two holes in KY whitetails and distance after shot is very comparable. The only DRT animal between the 3 of us however has been with a 115g Berger VLD out of my .25-06 last year. (Sample of 1 doesnt mean alot).
Hope that helps.

whenever I think about "distance traveled after receiving a good hit," I think about the massive study conducted in Europe which concluded that there was a VERY small difference in yards traveled by moose after being hit with the very small to the very large caliber guns.

"Yes," said Pooh. "One of them will do nicely."
Whitetail deer do not take all that much thought to kill, at least not in choosing a rifle. If it'll kill a man under the conditions you intend, it'll kill the deer.
Both 25-06 and 30-06 will do an adequate job, and dead is dead, right?. I don't own a 25-06, but I own several 30-06 rifles. The only advice I can give you is that the faster the velocity of the round, the more demands you are making on the bullet. There is a lot of talk on this forum about premium bullets. I shoot Hornady Interlocks and Remington Core-Lokts almost exclusively and have no problems with my 30-06 and related rounds. I have never experience problems-- no over-expansion or under expansion.
On the other hand, I see a lot of guys on here getting very emotional over their bullet tribulations and arguing this bullet vs. that bullet. The bulk of these are guys shooting at velocities greater than mine, and most of them are achieving those velocities by shooting a round that is something smaller than .308.
If I had a 25-06, I'd have not qualms about touching it off on a deer, or most anything else on the NA continent, but given a choice, I'd probably start thinking about switching to an '06 somewhere on game larger than whitetails. Look at it this way: you've got a near-perfect 2-gun North American battery. Now go and a 22LR for the chipmunks, and a .375 H&H for the Grizzlies.

This thread shows what a dumbass I can be..
I'd pick the 30/06 over the 25/06 any day....
but then if the question was would I pick a 257 Roberts or the 30/06, I'd say the Roberts...
or if it said the 30/06 or the 250 Savage, I'd pick the 250 Savage...
all the 25s have enough killing power for deer.. but some of us just happen to pick old time cartridges that have worked for years over newer stuff...
I'd pick the 250 Savage because it had less recoil..
I'd pick the 257 Roberts over the 30/06 due to less recoil and can still do the job..
I've always liked the 257 Roberts and Roberts AI espeically over the 25/06, because they both do the same job, but more efficiently than the 25/06...
for some reason to me, a loaded 25/06 round always looked as dumb to me as a lap dog's head, mounted on top of a Great Dane's body...
to me the only good thing the 25/06 had to have said about it, was that it was not as dopey looking and insanely overbore as the 257 Weatherby was...
now I will go put on my fire suit, and sit quietly awaiting the coming insults from every 25/06 fan and 257 Weatherby fan on the Forum Board...
and just to answer the questions before they come.. 1. yes my mother does wear combat boots.. 2. yes my dog is ugly 3. yes I do have a questionable genetic background.. 4. Yes, everyone in my family, is mentally retarded 5. Yes we get volume discount rates at the Local Loonie Bin 6. yes I am frequently accused of being an idiot.. 7. Yes I do tend to piss off those that I don't share their opinions... 8. Yes I am accused of being full of scheiss frequently...
but my opinion still stands...

Yeah that "on the fly" comment did two things for me: 1. My jaw almost hit the floor. 2. I started laughing out loud.
Simply crazy what people used to do. NEVER would I shoot a high powered rifle into the air like that...

Shaman, for under 200 yards will my M71 in .348 do for a "big bore"? I do need to get a small bore other than my AR. My wife has the "varmint poppers" .22 Jet (H&R), .22 Hornet (Ruger 1), and a Martini Cadet in .223. I'll spend a few weekends at the range and see which rifle prints smaller and/or feels better. The 30-06 is on a Sako action with a tapered octagonal barrel with a rib. It was too nice looking to pass up. I'm having a gunsmith check the headspace and throat or lead. It seems to be one turn in 9 1/4 inches so it may have a long throat. My other choices were .270, 30-30, .300 savage, 7.62x54 (Tigr or a M95 Winchester) or the .348. Of them only the .270 and the Tigr are set for long range with a scope (with my eyes I need it) and I don't want to drill on my mom's old M99 to scope the .300 Savage. I suppose using the Tigr with an 8X PSOP would give me style points...

Cole said: "On game larger than deer you will see a lot difference."
I say otherwise.
But the caveat is - I've only reloaded Barnes all-copper bullets - since they come out.
The 25-06 is FAR more comfortable to shoot. This aids in accuracy on game. It is also quite a bit flatter - with long ranges - that could be a factor.
I say "On larger game you will NOT see a lot of difference" - "IF you shoot premium bullets."
Numerous species of B.C.'s big game - has found this to be true.

I like both. I have hunted with people who have shot both, I have shot both.
Like many have said. Now I will say, the 25-06 is a lot funner to shoot than the 30-06. Less recoil and still reaches out and touches.
load the 100 to 120 grain pills sight it in dead on at 25 yards which should turn to about 3 inches, give or take 1/2 inch, high at 100 yards. You should be dead on with minimal difference at about 250 to 300 yards. Should easily be able to shoot out to at least 400 yards without having to give some lightbetween the back and cross hair.
A 25-06 or 257 Roy will be my next big game rifle. I have a love affair with those two flavors. If my 308 new about it, I would be in trouble.
On the other hand besides the kick, the 30-06 is a very nice round. I used to shoot 165 BT out of mine, and it did well. Never cared for anything over that.
Shoot the one you can handle best and can get to group best. Then use the other for a backup.

Hit a critter wrong, even with premium bullets, and you've got a headache with either. Hit a critter right and even the not-so-premium bullets give good kills with either. That'll be 2 cents.
