New to the forum thought I'd share, something that I was always intrigued by and finally did it. Wanted an all around gun to carry, my 270 had to be the martyr. My first custom hunting rifle.

Rem 700 Action
Barrel Pac-Nor 22" #5 contour
Talley steel base and rings
McMillan stock (borrowed from 35 Whelen until Swirly arrives)
Bushnell 1.5-5 X 32 Elite 3200
CH-4D die set

And chambered in 400 Whelen. Fired formed a few rounds with 210gr 41mag bullets seated backwards, a lot of work ahead and can't wait to see how it shoots full power loads. Thanks to Barnes and Hornady for still making bullets.
My first trips planned for it; pigs in Oklahoma, January anterless deer season in Iowa and Moose in 2009 in Alaska.
Maybe a little crazy, but like to be a little different.

400 Whelen compared to a 35 whelen

I thought you were going to say 338-06, but very very cool. One more 270 down, a whole bunch more to go LOL.

You forgot to tell them about your bottom metal.

This is njs1230, my mentor, shooting/hunting partner and funder of many projects(g). My much older brother from another mother.

Yeah, the gun is sweeeeet.

Too bad he makes his bitch fireform all those cases (grins).

Hey Neal,

I have a 400 Whelen also, but with the 40 degree (AI) shoulder.

It's an incredible round.
I took it to Tanzania in 2006 for a one gun hunt....buffalo, hippo, hartebeast, etc.

I.T.&D made my barrel, so it's closer to .410 than .411, but I shoot .411 bullets exclusively.

As you probably know, Quality Cartridge mades headstamped brass, but you will have to neck ream after you size it from the cylindrical form it arrives in.

After you take some game with this rifle, you'll wonder how you lived without it.

Great choice, and nice rifle.
Can't wait to hear about your next hunt with it.

Garrett

Thanks for the replies, from what I've done so far the headspace issue is indeed an old wife's tale
