12 ga or 20 ga?

I plan on buying an 1187 slug gun for an upcoming deer hunt in OH and Im torn bettween 12 and 20 gauge. Ten years ago it would be 12 ga all day but seems the 20's are the hot ticket now.
What do you guys thing? I have heard the 20 is accurate out to as far as 150 yards, is this BS?
Does anyone have 1st hand info on the 20?

I have an NEF rifled 20 gauge that is accurate to 125 yards easily.I haven't tried beyond that range.In my experience,the 20 gauge shoots more like a rifle in trajectory than a 12 gauge but that may be just my perception.The slugs I use are palin old Remington sluggers.The sabots didn't shoot well.

This maybe a silly question since these bullets are so dam big but how much energy does your standard 20 ga slug have at 150 yards vs a 12 gauge?
Is 150 yards a real number for a slug gun with todays slugs?

I've read your other thread as well,but you pose a slightly different question here.
A 12 usually hits with more energy, simply because those slugs are heavier traveling at about the same velocity.For instance, a common 20 ga. sabot bullet is .45 cal. and weighs 250 -260 grs at a listed 1600-1900 fps(which is never right).A 12 sabot round usually has a 385-438 gr. bullet at the same listed speeds, therefore it does indeed have more energy.A deer will never know the difference however.Trust me.
Trajectory is very similar as well.I'll stick with sabot rounds, since you seem to be leaning that way.A 20 doesn't shoot any flatter than a 12 does.This is true of sabot rounds or Foster slug rounds.Is 150 doable?Sure.You'll spend some cash and time at the range to get there, but its certainly doable.The 200 yard shots that people talk of are not as doable.Possible, but not as easy to attain.

Thanks Ruger, if Im reading you right you're not seeing that much diff in the 12 or 20, and that being said I think Im going to go 20 due to weight and recoil.
As for 150 yard shooting I feel that is the max for any shotgun, 12 or 20. Of course assuming the gun and shooter can pull it off.

Recoil with the 11-87 is negligible for either 12 or 20. As you suggest, the 20 will be lighter, and that's a good reason for choosing it.
For what it's worth, my favorite slug gun for deer is a pretty little 870 smooth bore in 20 ga. With pretty much any Foster type slug (I really prefer the old Activ slugs.), it is a good 75 yard deer gun for the hilly, heavily forested areas that I hunt.
