It seems like about this time of year, summer after summer, I either buy a new rifle or fight off the urge.

For years, it was about October/November using my birthday as an excuse.

Now I buy one when I have the cash and the urge.

(And I haven't got a hunt to pay/save for.)

From years of experience and anguish, I can say positively only that I know when I'm NOT going to buy a new rifle.........within one month of opening day.

Finding that perfect scope and load for a new rifle these last few years has never taken me less than a month. I won't rush puttin' a rifle and load together ever again just to have a new rifle to carry on opening day.......BTDT. Too much stress which took a bit of the fun out of the whole process. I can do it, but choose not to.

Now the day after the season ends up to 32 days before season opens, I revert to being a new rifle slut.......anytime, anywhere.

I don't buy NEW guns, I buy USED guns at prices I can afford to sell w/o a loss.

Yeah, I have a pattern. Extra cash in hand seems to be a contributing factor. Great deals on new or like-new used rifles seems to be another. Although the .257 Roberts is my favorite rifle, there seems to be another trend at work as well lately. didn't own a .30 until 11/04 but look at everything I've bought since...

11/2004 -- .300 Win Mag
01/2005 -- .30-30
11/2005 -- .308 Win
11/2006 -- .30-06
02/2008 -- .30-06
03/2008 -- .30-06

Am looking real hard at a Rem M700 in 7mm-08, though, one of the "Special Purpose Wood" (Walnut) models mfg in 2005 and sitting on a dealer's shelf ever since. The .30-06 I bought in March was its sibling, got it for $425 and could do the same for the 7mm-08.

And the BIGGEST TREND OF ALL -- buying guns I DON'T need. The 7mm Rem Mag I got in 1982 was my first centerfire. It has taken everything from prairie dogs to elk with equal aplomb. Nothing I've bought since kills things faster or deader...

I expect my pattern is similar to others. While I am always looking it takes a unique gun at the right price when I am flush with cash.

The last ones are a couple of Mannlicher Schoenauers. I did not need either however they met the above criteria.

They are the second top from the top in the pic below and the one at the bottom. How can you pass up a full stocked carbine in your favorite woods cartridge (358) or a 30-06 MS at a price less than that of some new (cheap) guns?
