Id like the opinion (especially of the guys who have acctually saw combat with a rifle)
whats the best vest, backpack or belt/pouch option, or other way youve found to carry 8-12 mags on your body, like you might use if actually expected to go into combat with your rifle and ammo, you sure don,t want to run out of ammo, so theres a minimum 8 30 round mags, and 12 would be nice if you could easily transport them...
obviosly theres several options, but once you start with the basic BDUs and BODY ARMOR carring a decent supply of ammo adds both weight and bulk so you want it easy to access, and not in your way if you need to run, climb or crawl...whats the best options youve found?

Never been in combat so take my opinion for what it's worth...

http://www.eagleindusties.com

http://www.atstacticalgear.com

These are some good companies to start with from reports that I have seen and from what I have seen personaly. I have a TT belt with 3 open top mag holders, 2 pistol mag/knife pouches, a double GI pistol mag pouch, a dump bag from ATS, a small misc. pouch and a TT holster for my Sig 228. I have a Bug Out Bag from LaRue Tactical with various pouches to throw in the truck or whatever just in case.

As a civilian I don't see the need to carry much more but prefer something lightweight and portable so I went with the belt instead of a chest rig. If I'm defending my home, I have everything here to resupply. If I'm "bugging out" my truck and 4 wheeler will carry the extra supplies.

Again just a civilian's take but the above companies do make good equipment.

Haven't seen the elephant myself, but I train two or three times per year with guys who have, and try to pass on their tips to my guys. So FWIW, here's my take on it.

I have gone to a chest rig in the past year or so for training and call-out purposes. My choice was the Eagle Industries LE chest rig:

http://www.eagleindustries.com/product.php?productid=695&cat=40&page=1

This rig holds 6 30-rnd mags in the front pouches and has MOLLE compatible panels on both sides. I mounted pistol mag holders on the left panel (six 1911 mags, but you could put more depending on the mag carriers you choose) and a small tac-med pouch on the right. This still allows me to carry my pistol on my belt on the strongside hip (a large tac-med pouch would prevent this), but if I have time I put on a thigh-rig holster for my blaster.

In my experience, chest rigs with more than 6 mags on it becomes cumbersome in awkward shooting positions, particularly prone. The beauty of a simple chest rig is that it's simple, easy to put on, and can have everything you need on it. Mine hangs on the doorknob of my bedroom closet next to my AR, and has a Surefire light on one strap, cell phone pouch on the other, all the ammo I could need in a home defense situation. I can throw it on over my jammies in 2 seconds.

A chest rig also allows you to "dress in layers". On a call-out, I'll put on my vest first, then throw on the chest rig. At training, I'll add a Camelbak. On field exercises or for "bugout", I've got a small backpack containing another 8 AR mags, boxed ammo, food, extra socks, a fleece jacket, tool kit, first aid kit, etc. My pack is again an Eagle product:

I don't carry any more kit on my belt than I have to. A fully-laden duty belt will have me whining inside of 30 minutes... add 6 fully charged AR mags to that, and I'll be miserable in 10. If you have back problems or any more than a slight belly bulge, carrying your AR stuff on your belt is gonna be uncomfortable.

Hope this helps

I was in almost forty years ago, then it was pistol belt and suspenders haul eight or ten M14 mags around all day and you know you have done somthing. As I recall our basic loadout was four mags. but when we went incountry the first time Gunny told the supply people we were to get five pouches, with two mags each plus the one in the rifle.that was 220 rounds plus six grenades each and belts of M 60 ammo, laws and other assorted tools of death and distruction. Don't know how much we were acctually packing, but I know I feel sorry for the pack mules when I go to Elk camp now.
