I walked into a local Sportman's Warehouse with the intention of buying a Zeiss Conquest in either 2.5-8x33 or 3-9x40 to put on a new 35 Whelen. I've always been a Leupold fan but wanted to try something different and heard such great things about the Conquest here at 24HCF.
I asked the salesman for a Conquest 3-9 out of the case to look through it at a wall about 80 yards distant with some mulies hanging. It was very bright and clear. Nice glass indeed. The Conquest though looked clunky to me compared to the Leupolds I've used. So in order to clinch the deal and convince myself to get something different, I'd ask to see a VX-III 3-9 to see how much better the Conquest was.
I wish I was surprised, but the VX-III was the clear winner hands down for clarity and forgiving eye position. I then compared a 2-7x33 VX-II and it was just as much better than the Conquest. Aaargh, I wanted to make a change, but just couldn't. Leupold for me from here on out.

You are not alone my friend. I've done the same thing, and walked out with the one that has a little gold ring...

Those Zeiss Conquests are clunky/boxy-looking when compared to the sleek lines of a Leuppie.

You're right, if you happen to have any laying around, send them to me and I'll send you my Vari-X II 2-7x32

While an in store test leaves a lot to be desired after comparing 4.5-14 VX-III and Conquest in the field, on multiple occasions, failed to see a big difference in clarity/resolution......and I wanted to. There are other parameters to judge a scope by but after reading about Conquest's glass superiority here for sometime now I expected something drastic. There wasn't. FWIW.

Have done the exact same exercise in the same store. I even talked the sales guy into letting me take them outside for a look see. I have 6 Leupolds...........
For the money, Leupold optics and warranty can't be beat.

I have owned leupolds of various levels, zeiss v's & conquests, a swaro ph, couple s&b's...i liked most of them execpt an old Leupold 3-9x33 compact. I even side by side tested a vx-iii, conquest, & s&b looking fir some huge differences. the main differences were aesthetics, weight, reticle thickness & size of the sight picture. the new vx-iii hung with the other 2 euro's except for the thinner duplex. now the vari-x iii I had would not hang with a conquest when tested them some years ago. the 2.5-10x45 vx-7 I have is overkill but it does best the brand new 2.5-8x36 vx-iii I just bought & it should for the money. brighter, richer colors, better contrast, better reticle but bigger & heavier....

I have a 4.5-14 VX-III that I will gladly trade out for a Conquest in the same power.

An "in the store" test on optics, is like comparing the, err.... "physical" merits, of several women whilst sitting across the bar from them.
That ain't where the goods are put to the test.....

Apparently you didn't read the post by the fellows who have used them in the real world. But then, what should we expect from you?
When I compared binocs, I compared them outside and the "cheap" Nikons won. When I compared scopes outside the store the Swaro lost bad against the Sightron II and the LPS.

I've used them in the real world and Leupys that I owned didn't match up with the Zeiss and that was over several weeks of using them.

I can't believe that I am the only one in the world that really knows what brand of optics is the best. Are you ready? It's the brand that suits you and makes you happy for whatever reason. ! ! !

Then, to your eyes, you know what you like.
Just keep putting those scopes in those magic see-thru mounts to flatten your trajectory, and have at it.
And, an in-store test, still don't show schit. What matters is what an individual sees in the field; what's best to them. If your eyes prefer lower quality glass, well, have at it..... you've saved yourself beau coup dinero, and you'll be happy with what works for you.
What you should expect from me, is not to sugar coat schit, and not to do anything but laugh at your dumb azz posts when you come up with that flat-world crap, or the amazing discoveries that see-thru mounts flatten your bullet trajectory. Then again, you apparently didn't read, understand, or have enough faith in physics in the first place, so what should we really expect from you?

"Where the goods are put to the test....." is where a lot of this internet "superiority" BS falls to the way side. Cause where the rubber meets the road it don't mean chit. See the cross hair, paste it where you want the bullet, the bullet goes there is where it's at. Conquest's certainly are very able but now have achieved the same "gang mentality" that Leupold use to have here. That causes those of that compare both side by side for the first time to expect something dramatic but.......

I too have a VX-III Leupold 4.5 X 14 I would trade for a like power conquest.
Kind of funny how people are on the net. You would think that if people actually tried both and the Leupold was superior for most there would be a lot of Zeiss's to be had. I bought my Leupold's first and wish I hadn't after trying the Zeiss's which I actually got from Doug for a hair less, but then again if I hadn't I wouldn't know what I was missing. I much prefer the focus and fixed eye relief of the Zeiss and the Zeiss scopes glass clarity on my models is much crisper and brighter and sharper than my Leupolds. I didn't like the conquests when they first came out in the store because the expensive Euro's looked clearer, it was only after a few years worth of reviews here did I decide to try them and they still don't match the high end Euro's but the two conquests I have beat the three Leupolds I have in the $500-700 price bracket and have become real good all around middle of the road hunting scopes for me. If Zeiss would increase the eye relief to 4" on all their models, especially the victory's they would have a winner for me since I shoot some kickers, but I still prefer the fixed 3.5" over the variable eye relief of the Leupold. when I shoulder my Zeiss's they are right on every time. My Leupold depends on what power I left it on. The Leupolds always glare more in the sun Too!
I remember when everyone hated the new Remington X-mark pro trigger and were all agreeing the old one was better, I tried one out and preferred it but I just couldn't seem to find any of the dissatisfied owners to swap for my old one they thought was so much better. Now really good reviews of the new trigger are starting to surface and every ones jumping on the band wagon saying how great it is for a remington.
I always figure you have to try everything yourself a few times before you can actually decide what really suits you, unfortunately this costs a lot of money which I never seem to have enough of. But if we could only swap with the people who preferred the other product in a comparison, we could all get what we wanted in the end and recoup some of that money! But I think way too many who write here have never actually owned both products they comment on to compare them properly in the field.

VA,
Did Ringman discover a new law of physics? See-through rings flatten your trajectory? That means a trip to Wal-Mart and $14.95 will get me what I paid Gordy Gritters several thousand dollars (not including the cost of materials) to build?
Hot Dang!!
I gotta get me some a dem' see-through rings. Why...I could have a 800 yd point-blank 0 if I put them see-through rings on my Gordy-gun!
