Im in the proces of putting together a slug gun and need to pick a scope, right now Im thinking Leupold 2x7 shotgun, I like the 75 yard parralax but dont like heavy duplex. Second choice would be a 2x7 Nikon Prostaff.

So what do you guys think?

Either of the scopes you mentioned would be O.K. but I'm kind of partial to the Leupold 2.5x 20mm fixed power. Got 2 of 'em. One on a Rem. 870 slug gun with a rifled barrel and one on a Mossberg 500 turkey gun. For shotgun use, even with the rifled barrel slug gun, 2.5x magnification has always served me well. I've also used a Leupold vari-x II 1-4x 20mm that worked real well. I wouldn't go higher than 4x on a shotgun but I've talked to a lot of guys who like stuff in the 2-7x range so it's mostly what you feel comfy with. Same thing with reticles. I lean toward the heavier duplex on lower powered scopes especially in a thick woods on an overcast day or at first or last light. Don't forget that a lower magnification gives a much better field of view. Other than that; just let your eyes decide.

The Leupold 2x7 shotgun scope is a terrific scope and I have used mine for almost 20 years with zero problems.

Heavy duplex is subjective but it offers some strong advantages in deep cover or low light conditions, precisely where I use mine. At slug-gun ranges, which I consider 125 yards and in, I don't believe there is any real disadvantage with the heavy reticle.

In terms of durability, I don't think you could make a better choice.

I use a Schmidt&Bender 4x36 scope on my Tar-Hunt slug gun. It's an awesome little scope!!!

My Ithaca DS II has had a Leupold 2x7 on it since purchased in '87 or '88. Never been off the gun since and has taken a beating!

Before that gun it was on an Remington 870 slug gun.

Yep, I'd say that one would work for you.

+1 on the Leupold 2x7 had may lesser brands fail on a slug gun, have not had a single problem since switching to Leupold many years back....eye relief sucks on the prostaff, glass isn't as good either...

I have a few of both scopes that you have cited and would recommend the Leupold 2-7x33 Shotgun scope with the HD reticle, unless you have a limited budget. I find the HD reticle to be quicker on target than the standard duplex because it is so big and so obvious that it attract your eye. Actually, I don't see a great deal of difference between the optical quality of the Nikon ProStaff series and the Leupold Vari-X II/IIc 2-7x33 Shotgun scopes. IMO, the Nikon ProStaff is a good scope that would be an even better value if it had the option of a HD NikoPlex reticle.

A lot of folks claim that the HD reticle covers too much of the POA, but few people shoot competative paper with a 2-7x scope and the size of the POA that is covered at the intersection of the HD reticle is a smaller area than most people can see on a game animal over 50 yards away under most hunting conditions.

in this little corner of the state it is shotgun only for deer hunting. the state of nj is shotgun only so i have had more than a little practice mounting and selling scopes. the lower power leupolds hold up well as do the lower power burris scopes. my customer base does not support the higher end scopes so i can't comment on those. all others, weaver, simmons, tasco, bushnell, redfield, swift, et al do not hold up well to the recoil of a twelve gauge shotgun. i have had them not hold zero, lensed pop loose, tubes separate and cross hairs break.

When I was in college I worked at a gun shop a few nights a week.
Saw more than a handful of Simmons and Tasco's off of shotguns where the cross hairs had spun. While I politely tried to explain that this same thing would happen again if they wished to exchange the scope for the same, more often than not, they opted for the cheap route and I'd see them again in a month or two - and, generally much more amenable to the Leupold the third time around... \:\)

Hey passport,if your leaning towards that Leupold 2x7 Shotgun scope don't let that hvy plex stop ya. I got the hvy plex in my 1.75-6x32 Leupold and although I haven't hunted with it I've had it out at different times of the day playing with it. I can tell ya one thing and that is the hvy plex at first and last light don't look TOO hvy. For my hunting situations I'm going to LIKE it!

til later
