My Ruger Blackhawk sometimes has a problem and I'm hoping someone can help me fix it. It is a New Model Blackhawk in .357 mag that I purchased used.

At the range, it sometimes jams when cocking the hammer. It will take several tries to get it to cycle. Upon cleaning it today, I noticed it had the problem even with the cylinder removed. It appears that when I pull back on the hammer, the top of the transfer bar hangs up on the bottom edge of the firing pin. I noticed with the barrel pointed upwards the transfer bar clears the firing pin okay. If the barrel is angled downwards, it jams every time. Anyone else ever experience this problem? Is there a remedy for it?

Picture of the jam below. Thanks for the help!

Gary

There is a spring loaded plunger on the rear end of the base pin which keeps the transfer bar pushed back to clear the firing pin.
Gravity wil do this if you point the gun upward. Possible causes: base pin not seated all the way back, plunger frozen in the forward position from rust or dirt. No plunger or spring in the pin (Old Model base pin)

I get a few of these in every year with a similar problem.. The cure is to remove the transfer bar and file/grind a slight bevel on the top of the transfer bar where it contacts the firing pin.. It should now easily slide up over the pin..

No more jams..

Just my opinion...but before you start removing metal and/or altering a safety device you should first follow the advice of RWO and see if that solves the problem for you.

I fully agree.. However, since it happened once, what's to prevent it happening again? About the time you REALLY need that handgun to function??

This is a very minor alteration and does nothing to impair or possibly make the transfer bar inoperable..

BTW, it was a Ruger customer service rep who told me about this little item about 10-12 years ago..
