I love the usual suspects such as Platoon, Pvt. Ryan, and Black Hawk Down. One that I don't hear folks talk about much is called The Beast. It's about a Soviet tank crew in Afghanistan. I think it's quite good.
But have you guys seen any good foreign ones? I highly recommend the following:
Stalingrad - an awesome movie; from the German perspective
Tae Guk Gi - it has been called the Pvt. Ryan of South Korea
Les Indigenes - a French made film about African Arabs fighting in WWII

"633 Squadron" and as a close second "Wings of Eagles" where John Wanyne played Frank "Spig" Weed.
And if comedy's count, that would have to go to Kelsy Gramers "Down Periscope".
As to TV series, there used to be an old series called "12 O-clock High" much better than the movie of same title. And for the life of me can't figure why no re-runs have ever been shown.
And of course there was "Combat" with Vic Morrow.

Midway, Platoon, Apocalypse Now (Director's Cut), The Great Escape, "Zero, l'enfer du Pacifique" (It's a Japanese movie, I don't know the English title), Bastogne, Red Dawn, In the Valley of Elah and 3 very good French Movies: "Le Vieux Fusil, Train de Vie" and "Effroyables jardins".
They are not funny and don't give me fun or dream time like some other kinds of movies but I find them very interesting.
In fact, the war movies that bring me fun are the well known "war comedies" that helped part of the Europe to forget a bit hard times of WWII: "Mais où est donc passée la 7ème compganie","La Grande Vadrouille", "Le magnifique", "Papy fait de la résistance", "Kelly's Heroes" or "La vache et le prisonnier", ...

You make a good point. Hollywood put out a lot of comedies and a LOT of musicals during WWII.
My favorite "war movie" not mentioned so far is "Schindler's List". Not a traditional choice, I realize, but it is a sobering reminder of why that war needed to be fought... and why we're fighting that war's successor today, for that matter.

Already picked my favorite, but did anybody mention "Go Tell the Spartans?"
Not too many people have seen it, I guess, and I've only seen it once, but it's pretty good.
And a French movie: "The Train." Both with Burt Lancaster.
