Need something small and light with low recoil that will handle deer inside 200 yards. Varmints and targets are secondary. Need it to be short and compact for walking, stalking and climbing portable stands. I'm sure everyone will lean toward the 223AI due to choice of brass.

With the 6x47 I figure to get around 2,800 fps with the Barnes 85 TSX. There are light 6mm varmint bullets for small game so bullet choices are about equal.

I like the idea of not having to fireform the .222 Rem Mag brass for the 6x47.

Thinking on a 21" Model Seven. I've pretty much tried all the rifle factory offerings - 6mm BR, 25-35, .250 Sav, 6.8 SPC, 257 Bob, 7-08. .41 & .44 Rem mags all out of carbines.
Need something different.

Any suggestions ?

Those three especially seem to fit your needs. What didn't you like about them?

The 6x47 Rem sounds OK, too, but these all seem pretty comparable.

Theres nothing different in any of them as fare as shooting game. Stick a good bullet in the right place is the only importance.

I liked them all. Just found something I thought I needed more and traded them away.

The only problem is the more exotic the cartridge the more trouble it is to trade or sale.....

Why not go 222 Mag? I just had a Sako L461 HB re-chambered/cut to 21" and a 700 on the way. AI ballistics and there are a load of 204 cases that just require a trip through a 222 Mag FL die. I've got a thousand Mag cases and 204's all over; they work the same.

Going from 204 to 243 would probably make the mouths too thin.

A 6 x 45 Imp would do pretty well too and lots of cases, but you will need to fireform, no biggee IMO.

I would just go 223AI. In reality, anything you mentioned would work just fine. The deer aren't going to know a difference....only us guys here, that are nitpicking, will know.

I was talking with a guy not too long ago that was running a 25-204 on wt's...it was hammering them just like 99% of the chamberings we argue about.

How about the 6x45? Uses .223 brass.

If I had a rifle with a .378 bolt face I'd go with a 6mm but I'm starting to lean to the 6mm for everything except the big stuff than it's 6.5mm.

Why are you leaning toward the 6's on the .378" bf?

For a light 6, I'd be leaning 6mmBR.

I've played with the 6mm BR. It was in a Virgin Valley 24" Encore carbine barrel. The T/C Encore would shoot one hole groups one minute and 3" groups the next. I was always worried about how it would feed out of a bolt action.

I've got a 25 WSSM that fills the nitch of the 6mm BR. Was leaning toward something on the .378 bolt face. The 25 Copperhead is nice, but not enough velocity.

Just wonting something different and since it will be used mostly as a light stalking rifle mostly for small southern Whitetail I'm leaning toward the 6x47 Rem. Knowing theres no difference in killing power over the 223AI.

.223AI
6x45 (a.k.a 6mm T/CU)
6x47
.25 Copperhead
.257 Kimber
.25-204

Any of them will do what you want, and just fine at it, too.

Some pretty exotic chamberings for a 200 yard deer...how tough are they in your area?

I'd be more inclined to load down a 308 or 243 class round with a lighter bullet if I needed less recoil... a standard 223 will do the job, or a 762x39...putting a 6mm bullet in a small case just lowers the velocity...how is that any advantage?

But a 223 with a 52 tsx is an effective game round out of all proportion to it's size, way past 200 yards.. it won't stay inside a deer at 200 yards and has plenty of velocity to boot.

An M7 is definitely in the running for light and handy...but why even use a 308 class action for a small round... that little CZ Mini Mauser is smaller and lighter...it's a good quality handy little rifle right out of the box.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 6x47. The one I had was a sweetheart to shoot, and was accurate. If I do one today, I'll be shooting 68 grain bullets in it. And, I have a barrel begging for a 6x47 chamber.

Because I'm liking 6's and if I had rifle with a .378 bolt face I'd go with a 6x47 or 6x45 with a repeater. Should work fine to 300 yards.

Of the two calibers you'er interested in. I would go with the 6x47. Little bigger hole, More bullet weight, and you could use it in states with caliber restictions. 358mt

6mmAR if you have access to something with a 0.445 bolt face. A Remington 799 or CZ-527 makes a great starting point.

I was actually thinking along the same lines. But I was leaning more towards a 7mm T/CU or 250 myself. To me it just depends on the donor rifle I find.

So what case is the 6mm Ar based off of?

Why not just build a 6mm-204 (6x47mm IMP 30degree). I'm the guy with the 25-204. My 6mm-204 barrel should be here at the end of the week.

With the 6mm-204 it's just a mater of necking up the 204 Ruger case trim and load. You should get about 100fps over the 6x47.

I've been playing with the 204 case and am running a 22-204 and 25-204 now and the I just had to do a 6mm on it also.
