Ok..here's one for the experts..how much variance in overall length do you consider acceptable?? I was putting togather some .25-06 this morning and for 20 rounds they did not vary more than .002. What is the general rule that you all use.?? I was using a Mitutoyo dial caliper...sorry it's all I had..

Ken, I had to buy one of the Hornady bullet comparators in order to get better data. The points on bullets are often smashed or deformed a bit, you have to measure from the bearing surface.

If you're measuring to the tip of the bullet and only getting a variance of 2/1000ths then I'd say that's excellent consistency! Keep doing whatever you been doing.

That's pretty good off the tip, but if you want to measure the variance in relation to the lands, get some sort of comparator, Sinclair makes a nice simple one, Stoney Point and Hornady make comparators as well. Selmer

Like everyone else said - either get a Hornady/Stoney Point or one of the other comparators (I'm still not convinced that's a real word). Cartridge OAL is largely meaningless - distance to ogive can be useful. Best, John
