I received my 338-06 Patriot back yesterday from Michael at K & D Custom Gunsmiths just in time for the 4th. The project began with the stock.I originally bought the stock at a deep discount because of the colors and my plans were to have it painted and I even ran a poll on here asking everyone's opinion.........Well I started a project based on the stock.

The rifle is a Ruger M77 MKII SS with a Shilen #3 1-10" Twist SS Barrel and a McMillan Ruger Classic stock in Red,White and Blue Marble. :flag: I had Michael cut and re-crown the barrel at 23",pillar bed the action, wire brush all of the metal and engrave....... he did a really good job as seen below.

Named

Personalized and Dated below the stock line.

Pillars and Bedding

I worked up some loads with Barnes 210gr TSX's and RL15 for the rifle last night.I thought this was just the right day to take a trip to the range and my nephew Zach who is staying with us for the week had never shot a centerfire rifle before and wanted to go along with me so we headed out.

Zach getting warmed up on a 10/22

Just before the moment of truth.....Shooting his first rifle...22-250

Then a 7/08......Notice the eyes

The aftermath.........:giggle::giggle::D

Even with his eyes closed he did really well for his first time out.

Then it was my turn with the 338........See below.

The rifle.

The set up

Warming up with the 7/08

Zach got me when I wasn't expecting it.

The targets...........It rained on us a bit.

The rifle shows promise around 51gr of RL15 so next trip I will tweak it a bit a try again. This will be used for hunting so any load that will hover around 1" will be fine by me.

Happy 4th.

Robert

Thanks for the comments. We had a good time. Nothing like burning a little powder on the 4th in a Red,White and Blue Rifle.

Yep we got some lightning and rain. The wind was blowing pretty good as well. We needed it and it didn't last long.

Glad you kept it patriotic. Cool setup in a cool caliber.
Should have let the youngster touch that one off.

SKane,

That offer was made and rejected He didn't want any part of the 338-06,300WM or 450 Marlin.

Nice rifle. Try the 180 gr Noslers or 185 Barnes X for a great deer/bear rifle. A nice charge of 4895 works well. I also shoot the 210 Nosler Partition which are used for Caribou/Moose

Nice looking gun

I regret selling that one. Here is a few loads I used to shoot in it back when it was in the factory tupperware.

Yup, I should have kept it but it looks like it went to a good home.

Nope! The 338-06 will never expand them bullets at those speeds. All 338 bullets are factory trained to hold together and zip right on through unless propelled by at least 100gr of powder. If it don't say MAGNUM on its butt the bullet just can't kill nuttin.

BB,

Thanks for the loads and thanks again for selling me the rifle. I just pulled my M77 SS RSI in 257Bob and put it in the tupperware stock for hunting purposes.
