I went out with a couple of co-workers and my youngest son. Splitting operating costs 3 ways makes a day of fishing a bit more palatable. South Central AK has been pretty well scudded in with clouds the past couple weeks, well it seems like the whole summer. To access the port in Whittier you have to drive through a tunnel that only has openings every hour, when a train isn't going through the tunne. We left home at 5:30 am, departed Anchorage at 6:15 to make the 7:30 tunnel opening, under another grey day.
As we approached Portage you could see the sun trying to break through. When we finally made it through the tunnel we were greeted with a blue almost cloudless sky, and almost glass calm water. After the launch, park, hike back to the launch drill we were under way at about 8am. Hardly anyone there, combination of mid week and high gas prices. The plan was to test the adage of the worst day fishing is better than the best day working.
We motored out to the south end of lone island. An area that supposedly produces halibut. I snagged one irish lord that I threw back, but other then that the two drifts struck out, so we motored further out to the South end of Naked Island. We drifted a few times, then I anchored up with a chum bag hoping we'd build up a decent scent field and the tide change would ring the dinner bell for the buts. No such luck, just a 9 y/o boy saying let's go to disk island. Last summer we'd fished a pinnacle to the E of Knight/Disk island and done pretty good with rock fish. After striking out again, we pulled anchor and headed for the pinnacle.
Several drifts, a good snag or two, not a single bite. Well, I knew of another rock pile in the passage between disk and knight island, so figured for sure we'd get something. A drift, anchored up, not a single bite. Man, this was looking pretty grim. Well, there was a spot I noted on the charts that seemed it would be good to give a go, don't know why I never noticed it last year. So we figured we'd try one more spot.
We started drifting over the shallow point of the pinnacle, from 70' off into the abyss, and by the time we got into 300-400' we'd motor back over the high spot. Finally a spot that produced. I managed the first fish, a decent sized yellow eye (pictured). Then my co-workers started pulling up yellow eye and other rock fish. On about the 3rd drift I had something slam my jig, and start stripping line. This was a real fish, I cranked, it stripped line, I maxed out the drag, it still stripped line. I finally got it about 10' from the surface, noted a good sized ling cod, and at the same time it decided to sound. Another fight and we had it in the net. If my spring scale at home can be believed it was a 40 pounder (44” long, pictured). Then on the same drift, bam, I had another ling on. This one was smaller, didn't fight so much, but man when we had it on the deck it was all over the boat. At the end of the day we ended up with 7 yellow eye, a few misc. rock fish, and the two lings.
We got back to port about 8:20, and then it was the mad dash of get to the dock, run to the truck, hope the trains aren't blocking the road, get the boat on the trailer and head for the tunnel. We got to the tunnel at 8:50, just in time for the 8:55 opening. By the time I dropped off my co-workers, got some grub, headed home, relayed the adventures, cleaned and bagged the fish, and cleaned myself off it was 2 am, long day after a 5am start.
Beats the heck out of work, but, I'm still beat. Hmm, I here the salmon are running on the Kenai so I need to head down with my net.

Paul,
Is the Knight/Disk island spot the one the four of us fished last year? If so, I can see why your son wanted to go back there. The action on Duskies was pretty steady. And when you're young, quantity beats quality most days.

Have you handled the shimano trevala jigging rods? I'm thinking about picking one up. Very light, thin, and strong. You can get them up to 200lb line rating, and they look like a heavy bass rod.

I've handled a trevala rod at a tackle store but haven't fished with one.

I hooked into big (i guess--it was stronger than i was, so i never saw it) amberjack using a trevala. pretty amazing the strength of the rod vs. its size. i believe it was the xxheavy version.
give one a try if you get a chance. the basic ones (not the 'f') go from $99-$150. The seekers are a little pricier, aren't they?

That seeker was $175.
Now I'm also looking at an Avet HX 2 speed reel, ouch.

Do you keep an eye on the classifieds at http://www.bloodydecks.com ? Various Avets pop up there from time to time.

Went by a local tackle shop to check out the trevala rods, and they were sold out. I was thinking about picking one up to do a side by side comparison with the Seeker. The seeker has a great back bone, but I'd like just a bit softer tip for sensitivity. They guy behind the counter is a great source of info and has been moving to lighter rods/reels.
I think I'll spring for a new avet, I know they're really tough, but I don't want to get a reel that needs a rebuild. I want something to spool up and go fishing.

yeah, that makes good sense. I'm such a cheap-asss, I automatically assume that everyone looks for used gear. It's a real crapshoot buying something used with that many small parts, especially knowing it's been used around saltwater.

I'm cheap too, but considering it costs me $200-300 to take the boat out for a day, saving a few bucks and having it croak on a trip is false economy.
That said I might just pick up a couple of shimano tld 20 two speeds, you can get them for pretty decent prices off e-bay, almost 1/2 what the HXL avet's run.

There are a ton of anglers using the Trevala for rockfish down here in NorCal. I find the action to be too parabolic for my taste, in that with even moderate weight, the tip is flexing a good 6 inches or so, until you get to the heaviest rod in the line (rated for 80-200 lb braid?). I also don't find them to be particularly light, even though the blank is quite small in diameter. That's not to say that they're not good rods, as there are a ton of folks that swear by them. They're just not my cup of tea. PM "Calvin" about them, he really seems to like them.

I'm looking at the medium light spinning (20-50lb line rating), thinking I can use it as an all-arounder for redfish in the marsh and the occasional snapper or king mackerel. I don't have the budget for a bunch of specialized rigs, so I'm going to see how this works. If I don't like it, I don't think it'll be too hard to offload it without taking a huge loss. As long as it doesn't wear me out casting around, or break on a bigger fish, I'll be happy.

I'd like to try one, but since I can't find any in town, I guess I'll stick with the seeker. I might go wtih a slightly lighter line class seeker in a 7' rod.

Lott,
B&Js has a Wright/McGill 7-ish foot rod with a 20-60 pound line rating (if I remember right - don't quote me). It's one of the newer dark blue ones, with a beefy reel seat (cant remember if aluminum or graphite), stiff butt, and good action. I think they wanted about $125 for it, with a lifetime warranty. I've been thinking hard about that one for a bottomfish jig rod to go with a couple of others I have.
I ebay'd a couple of Daiwa SL-X20SHA reels for jigging, on the premise that they have a compact, corrosion resistant graphite body and a big drag pack. I swapped the drag washers out for greased Smooooth Carbontex a la alantani (google alantani plus a reel manufacturer of your choice for reel rebuild photo journals). They seem to work very well - very light and tough, with a great cranking handle. I've not opened them up after this summer's fishing, but plan to do so soon. I've fished with a friend's Avet, and they are nice indeed, but I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money. The daiwas were $60-$80 each used.
