So I got an 8 ft monofilament cast net (3/8"), and am not having much luck with it. My best throws only get it about 70% open. I've used the nylon nets to good effect, and the same techniques are not really applicable. I've found lots of YouTube vids that show how, but all the pros seem to use nylon (maybe that should tell me something?).

Are the mono nets just that sucky, or is there some secret to using them? I figured they sell a lot of them, so somebody must get utility out of them. Should I just go buy a guide-quality nylon net and salvage the 10 lbs. of lead for bullets?

In the August issue of Sport Fishing there is a really good article on cast nets. You can also do a search on sportfishingmag.com for cast nets, and on the second page there are 2 articles on picking the right net and storing them. There is also a smokin deal on subscriptions for it. I usually get a copy at Gander Mountain, but have since subscribed.

Slow down your swing. Most overthrow. Mono Nets are fine, I regularly throw a 10 and 12 depending.

I only throw mono nets from 7'-12'(14'-24' diameter) and have no problems with them. There are many grades and construction methods on cast nets. You don't give us much to go on, but the quality of the net and the amount of weight, per foot plus you technique determine how uniformly the net will open.

Strick makes a good point slow down your swing a little, don't look at the bait when you through look above them and make sure you pull the back of the net around with your lead hand. Where are you from if your local I'll help ya out?

I'm by Crab Meadow (Northport), up the end of the road by the beach and creek. Slowng down my throw has helped much. It's been a while since I used one of these things.

Some of the better cast nets are now sold with an instructional videotape or DVD.

There is free stuff on the Internet, too.
Google "cast net video"
