I got a deal too good to pass up on a Stainless Stalker 375 H&H with 26" barrel and open sights NIB. It should be in Monday. Can I shoot hard cast bullets through it and what velocity could I push them through before I get significant leading? Trying to get more rounds per $, but if I ever point it at anything that can bite back, I'll probably stoke it with 300 gr Partitions.

last I checked, sierras and hornady's were still comparatively cheap. were it me, I'd work up a practice load under 1700 fps

Get you some Speer 235gr. HotCors and sime AA5744. Load 'em light and cheap and have a really fun plinking round. Or, use the Sierra or Hornady stuff like Utah said. I got some of the light stuff loaded up. I expect recoil like a 257, maybe a 270 and should be plenty for whitetails as well. I do love my H&H.

For my 416 Rem, I bought a cast mould for 350 grain gas checked slugs. Mixed at the Lyman #2 lead formula, I could run these at 1800 fps with no leading problems. If you're already set up to cast bullets, I'd buy a mould and carry on. If not, I'd probably just shoot reduced loads with the lighter weight copper bullets.

Back when I was casting quite often I loaded up the 375 H&H's here with a linotype metal gas check bullet by Lyman with a hollow point. Velocities ran up to 2200 fps with very good accuracy using IMR 3031 and kapok over it to hold it down.
I did shoot one deer at close range and it fell dead with a heart/lung shot. The exit hole was not that large but way over bullet diameter.

Amen brother. I like 55gr. under a 350 HotCor. Last time out, 5/8" 3-shot group at 100yds and recoil like a 180gr. 30-06. Gotta love it. 50gr. gets you 270 recoil.

I've burned quite a bit of powder in my 375 with cast bullets. I used a Lyman gas check 270 grain design with IMR 4227 loaded around 1500 fps. It shoots well enough up to around 1700 with my alloy. SR 4759 as also a good cast bullet powder with my M70 Winchester.

Hooray, UPS tracking says they just delivered to my FFL. Can't wait to get my hands on it! I was thinking that if the bullets were cast hard enough, a person might be able to run them 2300-2400 fps, don't know for sure though. I think I need to post the question over on the cast bullets forum. I'm not opposed to shooting good quality jacketed bullets (and I fully intend to shoot some), but I can probably get the hard cast ones for a very small fraction of the price. I already have a few calibers that take some spendy bullets, figured this would be a good opportunity to explore the cast lead route.

If you're planning to hunt with cast, they work just fine when "only" moving in the teens, at least that has been my experience.

Got my hands on the rifle. It is the older A Bolt without the ugly silver bolt shroud. That's just fine with me. With such a long sight radius, this thing just screams for a peep sight. Mounted using the rear scope base holes, that would give over a 30" sight radius. I'm thinking that I could do some serious shooting out to 100-150 yds with that setup. I'm getting dies, brass and bullets from a member here who unfortunately is unable to shoot his anymore due to a pesky doctor. I hope to put them to good use.

Broke her cherry yesterday evening. 270 gr Hornady SP's in front of 70 gr IMR 4064, 1 grain below max in my Hornady manual. Shot it standing with the iron sights at an umnarked pizza box about 40 yds. Nice 3 shot group a little under 2 inches, just a little high of center and perfect windage. I think she's a keeper.

Where do you find data for AA 5744 using jacketed bullets? I would like to try some reduced loads using some of the 270 gr bullets I have.
