All,

I know that Remington made the Sportsman 11 and Savage had the 755/775 series, but there are other Auto 5 copies out there, but I can't remember/find out what they are. I recall one with an aluminum receiver though; anyone know what the other Auto 5 copies are?

Kevin, the only A5 clone with an aluminum frame that I have seen was a Savage. Don't recall the model #. It was a 16ga. with a polychoke and a modified stock that ran up to the top of the back of the receiver to give it a "round back" profile. Uglier than sin. I've seen an A5 or two with a store brand (Westernfield maybe?) but I assumed those were made by Savage.

I'm not sure there are any "copies" out there....only variations. The Browning patented "humpback" auto was used in a number of configurations....some good, some not-so-good.....All in the eye of the beholder, I guess.

Do you consider the Franchis as a copy? They made a humpback long recoil gun, maybe still do. There's probably other furrin' examples not common in the US as well.

GPA - The Savage was the only "copy" as it was not a licensed Browning, but a copy they made when the patent expired, and it's the aluminum frame gun I was thinking about (I think the 775 was the aluminum one)

Joe - The Franchi AL48 is a non-humpback copy, and a good shotgun that can be had for not a whole lot of money.

338rcm - That's the one I was trying to remember; dead ringer for an auto 5.

Many years ago I traded for a Savage Model 745. It was the same design as the A-5 and had an aluminum receiver that had a molded ? in game scene. Mine had the polychoke and was a delight to shoot except for the habit of trying to jump out of my hands when it cycled and came back. I never did get used to the barrel sliding into the action to cycle. It had the same friction ring to adjust for different loads. All in all, it was a fine shotgun.
