We are thinking of getting a dog for the family, playing, jogging, and pheasant hunting.

I thought I was convinced about a Springer, but am now having second thoughts that we might like a Brittany instead.

Any opinions?

I personally like the looks of the Brittany better and the shorter ears pick up less cockle burrs and stuff in them.

had one when a lad

great little companion, run hard all day going back from one farm place to another.

that said she was the most gun shy dog I'd ever been around, my Dad had rescued her from an abusive upbringing (wow never thought of that, but the way he used to beat his coon and bird dogs, it had to be pretty bad to be deemed abusive by him)

someone else will chime in with better 411

figure dogs are like women, getting a good one is a good deal of luck

Britts are pointers.

Springers are flushers.

FWIW.

I am on my second Brittney, they are great dogs. Mine would point, back, retrieve and water retrieve. They have been great with my 7 yoa daughter. They are wonderful family pets. The only caution I would have is that they keep their puppy up til about 4 years of age. Do not be heavy handed with them, they really like to please and mine will hunt until they are exhausted. Lots of heart and love for a little dog. Nothing bad to say about these dogs or any Brittney I have come in contact with.

Never owned a springer, sorry.

I'm about to start looking for my second Brittany. Old Larry was about the best companion you could hope for. Not the greatest hunter but that was in the breeding, found out that hunting wasn't emphasized in that line so it was hit and miss in the pups. Larry cast beautifully and had a magically sensitive nose but could never quite get the idea we wanted pheasants. Of course he was a house dog, Britts need their people.

On the other hand a cousin has a kennel of field trial Britts and not so sure I'd want to try to keep up with them on foot. They are bred to move fast and be aggressive. His field trial stock tend to be a little high strung, what you want in a trial dog but not a companion dog. There are lines bred for companion/foot hunting that are calmer.

"Do not be heavy handed" would have been an understatement with Larry. He was so eager to please that more than a sharp voice correction was too much. Haven't met anyone that didn't love their Britt.

If hunting isn't too important American Brittany Rescue may be an option. Good info there too.

I had 3 Brittanies over the years and two turned out exceptional and the other was quite passable. We are trying a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon this time and he is an interesting little guy. A Britt would make you a great running and family dog.

Well, thanks for the opinions. We just picked up a free 4-year old Brittany!

So far she is good-natured but quite neglected. I don't know if she'll hunt (the guy said she did but yet could not tell me what commands he used for her in the field).

As stated above Britts point and Springers flush. Two very different styles. If you want a spainel to double as a waterfowl dog I would go with the Springer between the two. I would also recommend a Boykin Spaniel. Awesome retreiving and flushing dogs! They are not widely known outside the Carolinas but we have great stock down here. Many breeders won't sell you a dog unless you intend on hunting with it or competing in field trials with it. We are keeping them out of the show ring on purpose to maintain strong hunting drive. They are dynamite in a small package! Many have achieved the title of Hunting Retriever Champion where they compete against the Labs and Goldens. They tolerate the heat better than both which makes them great dove dogs in the Carolina heat in September. Check them out guys. They are great family pets as well. This may be the draw back to the breed because loosing one will just about kill you and the family. They have a way of really getting close to the family.

Brits are good pointing dogs and great family pets.
English pointers are great pointing dogs and next to worthless as family pets.

Brits take longer to train and are less forgiving of the trainers mistakes. (some say they have a softer nature)

Pointers almost train themselves and are more forgiving of a little rough handling.

Pointers are happy to live in the kennel.

Brits want to live in the house with you but they have the good manners to do so.

I never owned a brit that could keep up with a pointer when hunting them five days a week.

If you want a hard core quail hunting machine go with the pointers.

If you want a sweet family dog that will hunt with you get a brit.
