So what can a beagle be used for besides hunting wabbits?

....Tracking wounded game, and coon hunting too. Also they make a wonderful house pet , which is not the case with other hunting hounds.

Mine will open and trail most any kind of game bird. They use a little different sound on birds, Got to stay with them, if you want a shot, cause they don`t circle, like a rabbit does. Had to shock them off turkeys, cause they`ll run a country mile.

+1 Great pets! I can't imagine a safer dog to have around kids than a beagle.
I have some friends that have beagles trained to follow a blood trail (of any species) and they have recovered some deer which surely would have never been seen again without them.

They are awesome at finding wounded game. Bassetts are also very good at this!

Mine was a right good pheasant dog. Squirrels were a constant confusion for him however. A dead end trail at a tree just was not in his mental tool kit to understand what happened. Rabbit seasons are longer than bird seasons, the little dogs are all heart. Hunting beagles have not been as show blood ruined as some of the big pointing dogs have been.

What Uncas said about the show blood is true, but there are some classy looking gun dog beagles, thanks mostly to the hare people in the N.E. The late Frank Reese, from N.C. had some beauties! Gay Chase, was a good example. The most important thing in choosing a hunting beagle is: make sure there is no traditional brace breeding in his pedigree!!! Your feet will freeze to the ground before they will circle a rabbit. They are hobby dogs, not for hunting.

My little girl loves to hunt quail.

Originally I had planned to make her a wabbit dog, but we've got way more Jacks around here than Cottons. Jacks will flat leave the country and NOT circle back. In the meantime my Beagle is methodically sniffing along 20% of the Jack's speed. It's a losing proposition from the get-go.
Quail on the other hand, will sit still for her to nose up to. She learned quail scent and vocals VERY quickly. She's a silent flusher, so if my head isn't in the game, I'll get caught off guard by birds flying off while I'm trying to play catch up. She 's also a great spotter during the shot, and will be on a bird (assuming I hit) before the feathers have all floated to the ground. She's SO much fun to hunt with that I can't even begin to explain.
Even if she hadn't taken to Quail hunting, she's a fine little member of our family, and is very eager to please. I can't speak for all Beagles, but ours is VERY smart. For example, she started using the doorbell to let us know when she wants to come in from a bathroom break. She had no coaching from us.
Like any proud parent, I've gotta share just one more cool photo.

A ditto on using them to flush pheasants. I haven't had one for years but shot many pheasants over an early one. They don't point so if you hear a strange warble get right to them or they will flush the birds wild. Actually I nearly ruined mine for rabbits by hunting him on birds. He became accustomed to working in the fence rows and close to me to the point he wouldn't work the rabbits very hard.
We used beagles on our local jack rabbits (European hare) which can run up to about 10 lbs. Have known of beagles who would kill our jacks if they could corner them in a snowy fence row.
Probably not of much interest to US hunters but they can also be very good deer dogs. Do not work a trail too hard and tend to push the deer through at a fast walk rather than on the run. However, if you get a plus 15 inch beagle they can be as pushy as a bigger hound like a redbone, etc. Jim

Have been around some that would as soon run fox as rabbits. They even started on a coyote a couple times, gotta watch that as it can obviously have an unpleasant ending.

Mine were good on grouse on the edges of strip mines in Eastern KY. Just sort of circle and bawl at the edge of timber. You had to be quick on the draw, or the grouse would be gone. Frankly, I never killed too many because of this. I would come back later with a Setter where I found a bit more success.
