Yesterday my hunting buddy and I made it out for shooting the bigger stuff. I took my CZ 416 Rigby, Ruger 45 and he took his new semi-custom 400 Whelen.

I had fireformed about 100 rounds with 375gr. cast bullets, so he was eager to wring out his gun with what he'd use for hunting.
I'll post about the most promising loads:
1. 300gr. Barnes X, 63 grs. RL-15 in R-P cases; 2,347 fps. These loads showed a 10 fps velocity spread with over 25 fired. They were also quite accurate.
2. 300 gr. Hornady SP, 63 grs. RL-15, R-P cases; same speed. These are a cost effective bullet for target work; they pretty much duplicate the POI and grouping of the Barnes bullet.
3. 400 gr. Barnes Banded Solid, 55 grs. RL-15 R-P case, 2,100 fps. Not as accurate (from a bench) as the other two; shoot low and right, but good enough! Duplicates the 450-400 NE 3". Should say enough (grins). We dinked with POI, then nice groups were made. The first had a Hornady mixed with 2 Barnes. One got free on the second group.

The gun shows promise, and my buddy is excited; I would be too, it is a fun gun to shoot, in a great nostalgic chambering no less.

I sighted in my Rigby from the cast loads it had been shooting using 400 gr. Parts, 350 Speer MT, and 300 X's, all with 110 grs. RL-25. The Parts and the X's shot the best and close to POI; Partitions at 2,590 the X's at 2,690, and the rest were offhand practice.
My buddy bought some of those little 4X1 orange prairie dogs; I shot his with the Rigby, he got mad so shot mine and hit the counterweight with a 400 solid; we coudn't find one and the other looks a little chewed up!
I also shot some loads at our steel gong at 100 yds, and hit the lone surviving PD a few times with my 45 Colt.

It was a great day.

Hunting season is just around the corner....

Thanks Bob; of course they both shot better than the shooters ;\)

I wish the CZ had one of the newer stocks, maybe a stronger mag spring (though I've never had any issues). Both of those should be fixed.

Of course what I really need is to save and find something for it to fight with; right now its just a paper tiger.

Had an offer to take out a bison through a friend, when I told them what I'd bring they declined (grins).

Seems they had a local shooter insisting on brain panning it with a 223 and who knows what for bullets. Long story short, broken fence and lots of ammo dispensed.

Farmers don't like "bullet tests". I did have a buddy with some free range pigs that we "tested" on back when dirt was worth more than hogs; even at 200 lbs. they would be poor material for the Rigby!

You with your 416 Rigby and me with a 458 Lott-two Iowans with "big" bores. I can see the title now: DEATH IN THE LONG CORN.

I guess I better get a BigBore just to keep up with the (Iowa) Jones's!

Did you guys go to the Fair?

They're out there: giant bulls, boars and even the sheep are scary

Best to have plenty of firepower in this state!
