I took a hard look at the Lowa and Schnee offerings first but since I had a Cabelas gift certificate(or two) laying around and needed some better performing climbing/hiking/hunting boots for big game pursuits in Colorado, Utah, South Dakota, and Alberta... I pulled the trigger on the Alaskan Hunters by Meindl.

I am notorious for heel blisters from slippage and hope that these guys will help me out when climbing in overdrive. Limited trial in the store told me they were very comfortable but STIFF!

Anyone have any recommendations on how best to prep/break-in these particular boots? Also are different/better inserts necessary?

Appreciate any and all comments... even Steelies!

The boots should feel very stiff. The soles have almost no flex to them what so ever. They provide excellent support for climbing and side hilling. I've worn mine for the last four seasons sheep, goat, and caribou hunting and haven't been let down.

Bought some Denali's last year (older version) 400g insulated. Great ankle support and fit-hard supportive sole, had to put better insoles in them as they did not have enough cushion with the stock thin insoles(bottom of my feet were on fire packing out a mule deer) Now perfect. No ankle slippage either. Meindl puts a soft slippery liner between the boots insulation and your feet which really helps keep blisters at bay. My friend also bought a pair of the perfect hikers last year with 400g insulation and went on a backpack hunt without breaking them in and they were awesome.(The perfect does have a softer sole than most their other boots though.)

You will notice the rough insulation against your feet on other makers boots like Danner ect. I got heel blisters for the first time ever in a pair on new Danners last year while backpack scouting. Part of the problem with the Danners was they were slightly too small and fit too tight on the front of my foot causing the rear of the boot to be too loose and have heel slip. I had broke the Danners in for a month before backpacking in them. I only had a week to break the Meindl's in before the hunt and did it on the treadmill and eliptical in my basement.

They are stiff, that is for sure. I don't feel like mine were properly broken in for 150-200 miles, however, I only experienced minor discomfort and no blisters during break in. Somedays I wish they were still as stiff as they were when new, but not often.

If I wanted to accelerate break in, I'd try soaking them, then wearing them dry (be careful not to shred your feet doing so, though). I feel the biggest single change in break in on mine came when I walked down a creek (waist deep) for twenty minutes or so, then hiked a few more hours.

As for inserts, I went to a Cabelas after I had worn them for a little while, and swapped all different combinations of inserts and footbeds in, and just kept what felt the best (focusing on heel slip more than anything).

Good luck,
Carl

If your accustomed to a softer soled "hunting boot" you will definelty benefit from an insert until you acclimate to them. I use the very thinest sorbathane model that cabelas offered and was very pleased. I noticed most of my problems when walking on flat ground, once Im on a trail and aggressively climbing I do not notice the stiffness.

Every time I put them on I say "damn these are stiff", then after 5min the feeling goes away and they feel great.

I have flat and worn out arches and for me they have been a Godsend for my feet. Originally bought them for a goat hunt. Now wear them for even upland hunting in Pa. At end of day feet and legs are less tired then any boot I have ever used. Make sure you get the right size so your toes do not hit the front on downhills. They definitely have support-both ankle and arch and are meant to be stiff. That's need that to work in tough terrain.

Perfects have also worked out well for me. At least for me both are excellent, but the Ak Hunter is my favorite. Even wear for for around home use when boots are needed.

PS I agree with others the factory inserts are trash, not sure which ones I replaced them with.

Also Obenauf's heavy duty-LP leather perservative has worked great with them for keeping the leather waterproof and preventing cracking and dryout.

All of the above good advice. I have really high arches on my feet and had good success with superfeet inserts with them. Meindls are really good boots.

Heel slippage is the major issue I have experienced in the use of a wide assortment of boots so I am truly looking forward to a more rigid construction designed for someone who likes to remain on the move. Since I spend a good bit of time in cowboy boots, to me, just about anything in the way of a insert is "comfy."

For those who have taken the time to reply, I want to extend a big THANK YOU for sharing your advice and experience, it is sincerely appreciated.

Not much I can add, stiff as hell which is a good thing. Go stomp in some water and walk them dry, repeat if necessary. After that, chuck the factory inserts and try some Superfeet greens. If I am sitting for a while I will loosen them up because they feel too stiff but that feeling disappears when you move.

I just wore them for a couple of months before my first hunt. Walking the dog, scouting etc. I personally wouldn't soak them, but do strongly believe in greasing them up on a regular basis, it helps the break in somewhat and doesnt harm the leather.

Why wouldnt you soak them? They are going to get that way anyway. I even wear mine snowshoeing, they are that comfortable.

One thing I was told by Kenetrek when I received my mountain extremes, is NEVER use oil based leather treatments on a boot with a rubber rand. The glue used to put that rubber around the lower portion of the boot will be attacked by the oils and the glue will start to fail. They told me only use water based leather products such as Nikwax. So no Obenoufs or Montana pitch blend on the Meindle alaskan's or Kenetrek mountain extreme's.

Just an FYI.

Mine have been altered at the request (command) of my goat hunting outfitter.

Only pair of boots I wear now. My feet did get cold in them during the winter time.

ScoutinWyo:

I sure Kenetrek had some reason to express concern over oil based
leather treatments. However, for the record Obenoufs was recommend by Cabelas and right or wrong I have treated mine at least 6x in the past 1.5yr. So far no apparent problems re: separation of rubber and leather. Boots have been used hard and in various conditions. Who knows, perhaps I have just been lucky.

With many different products I have been given advice that I either knew to be wrong or eventually found no basis for following certain recommendations. Not saying Kenetrek is wrong, but in my experience so far it has not been a problem

I was interested to read what ScoutinWyo wrote about Kenetrek's recommendation. I used to wear the Alaska Hunters and now wear the Lowa GTX Extremes, both with the rubber rands. I really like the Obenauf's LP, but the rubber rands do tend to start coming off my boots within a year. I never considered that it might be the boot grease doing it.
