I am almost ready to adopt a middle aged Springer rescue dog. He's healthy, responsive and knows basic commands. I was lucky to first see him in a thunder and lightning storm and he didn't even seem to notice the noise. This boy would join my three year old Lab at my house. If he works out as a pheasant hunter, that's fine. If he doesn't hunt, he can be a pet. My wife approves because of his size.

Are there any problems known with Springers of which I am unaware? TIA, Ward

Check this link:

The biggies are Rage Syndrome, Retinal Degeneration, and Hips.

Most good breeders will have results of screening tests for eyes and hips for the sire and dam. Rage Syndrome is worth asking about.

I have heard the same thing on the Rage Syndrom. But I would not hesitate to take the dog. I am a Boykin guy but I love the Springers too! You may consider the Springer for a dove/duck dog as well. They are great dogs!!

The only thing I can tell you about Springers is they have a soft mouth, that there GREAT with kids, smarter then hell, make great bird dogs, and are just a pleasure to have around 12 months a year.

My last dog was a Springer and I would have another but got tired of picking off birs and crap in her coat. I want the Lab route and love my boy but If I could get a Springer with a Lab coat it would be the perfect bird dog.

My Springer would sit in a duck blind, warm weather only, and was steady as a rock, she was a better reteriver than my Lab, but my Lab is poor in that dpt as Labs go.

GET THAT DOG!!!!!!! Please post a pic too. \:\)

I've always thought this as well--basically a short-haired oily Springer. Is there such a dog?

We had a Springer. One night my wife got out of bed and the dog would not let her back on it. He went nuts-barking and snapping. He never bit her though or lunged at her. She walked out of the room and I told him to lay down. A minute later he got up and found her and was licking her, like he was saying he was sorry.

It was very strange. That's when I read about Rage Syndrome. He never did it again, and he died when he was 15. One of the saddest days of my life.A fabulous, gentle, loving, intelligent dog. I wouldn't hesitate to have a Springer again.
