I finally picked up my new BLR a week ago Saturday. Last night was my first chance to get out and shoot it. I'm really impressed with this little gun. Every load I had made up was shooting right in there if I did my part (15 mph wind to). I shot a couple of 3 shot groups under 1 inch. Its also fun to shoot a medium bore....much easier to see the impacts at 100 yards. I had time to do a little free hand work at about 35 yards. I was able to get a nice little group that would have taken any game animal I was shooting at!
I had the chrono with and was watching my speed. I was a little disappointed in what I saw here. MY load was a 200 gr hornady over 49 gr of IMR 4895 clocking just shy of 2400fps. Does this sound about right? Anyone have a favorite powder for the 200 gr hornady out of the 20" blr barrel.
Thanks,
Steve

Here is data from IMR on 4895. Whats not known is their barrel length.
Cartridge: 358 Winchester 200 GR. HDY SP Hodgdon H4895 .358" 2.650" 44.0 2316 40,200 CUP 48.0C 2519 49,800 CUP
http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp
I always used 46 grs of IMR 3031 in the 99's with 200 Silvertips for about 2460 fps.
These days I use RL 10 with 180's and 200 gr bullets.
My guess is that the velocity shown on your chrono is correct considering instrument variations, instrumental velocity etc.
I would think RL15 would be too slow a powder.

I'm pretty sure its correct as my 7MM REM Mag was spittin' the 160 nosler over 63 gr of IMR 4831 at 2950. I just thought I'd see closer to 2500 fps. I guess 4 inches less barrel has more affect on velocity than I had expected. I had a 45-70 guide gun that didn't seem to lose that much velocity compared to the longer barrels and I'd thought that was due to the larger caliber and the fast burning powder. Kind of expected the same withe the .358 win.

Bigbuck,
I have been shooting a .358 BLR for several years. It is very accurate, absolutely deadly, & far longer ranging than many would imagine.
Like most members of the .308 family, load development is relatively easy, with many component combinations giving good results. The problem is powder capacity. you're almost always in a compressed load situation; sometimes very compressed.
Until recently, my best load was 49.5 gr. of IMR4895, under a 225gr. SIE at 2435 fps. Slightly more powder pushing a 200 gr. Hornady roundnose, yielded about 2520 fps. Both loads are near moa.
A couple of years back, I began experimenting with TAC. I used published 4895 data. The powder filled the cases nicely, without the long drop tube, & other compressed load requirements. The loads were accurate, but velocity was off, so i gave up the project.
The recent article by JB has me once again at the bench with TAC. Only this time, I'm using magnum primers. I'm building loads for heavy game, using the 225 gr. Partition & the 250 gr. Grand Slam.
My suggestion is to try JBs published loads (August Handloader). Unlike a lot of these so-called experts, he 's actually used the cartridge in the field.
Best of luck. you've got a great round in a great hunting rifle.

Monarch 3-9x. I find it a nice fit and the optics are impressive. I've always been a Leupold guy but this thing is great.
I've searched the magazine racks and it looks like I was a little late as I've not been able to find the arcticle. The woods where I hunt most of the time wouldn't offer a shot longer than 100 yards so my current velocity is probably just fine, but when I go out west next I'd really like to tote this gun along and I'd feel much better if I could get over 2400 fps especially if I got to a 225 gr boattail design.

I'd give Hodgdon BL-C2 a try, it seems to give a pretty good compromise between velocity and pressure.
Off Hodgdon's database:______________________________________
200gr. HDY SP, COL @ 2.650" Starting
49.0 Grs. BL-C(2), 2329 Vel.(ft/s), 31,500 CUP Pressure.
Maxium Load
52.0 Grs. BL-C(2), 2464 Vel.(ft/s), 41,800 CUP Pressure. ________________________________________
225gr. Sierra BTSP, COL @ 2.770" Starting
48.0 Grs. BL-C(2), 2324 Vel.(ft/s), 39,900 CUP Pressure.
Maxium Load
51.0 Grs. BL-C(2), 2431 Vel.(ft/s), 45,400 CUP Pressure. ________________________________________
Seems like the velocity is always right up there with the best, and the pressure is somewhere between 5-10% less.
But some people don't care for ball powders.
