what do you think the optimium weight for a backpacking rifle should be?

6.5 to 7 lbs. seems ideal to me, though I've not had the luxury of handling a sub 6 pounder.
what I use now is the max for me, well not really just toted my .338 around in the mts. so the boy could use my 7 mag.
it weighs 7 lbs. 4 oz. scoped, slung and 3 in the belly.
thought of it as a lightweight once upon a time, but techno has passed her by. she's a middleweight I reckon, but man o man is she the death wand. Love that rifle.

6.5 to 7 pounds, although I have never hunted with anything lighter than that.
I cannot imagine what a 5 lb rifle must feel like- a feather I should think!

Mag-Na-Port will fix that. It really tamed my Kimber 325. 7lbs scoped and slinged

My Remington Ti rolls a tad over 6-lbs. and is a 06. The recoil is not bad at all.

I thought about that but its only bad off the bench. Field positions arent bad at all.

My Kimber Montana .325 WSM isn't bad at all for recoil. It weighs right at 7 lbs with scope & sling. Don't think I'd want it much lighter though.

don't believe I'd want my 7 mag to weigh any less truthfully, it's not unpleasant to shoot at all, but I wouldn't want to turn it into a filling remover either.
I'd like to have a true lightweight rifle, but I'd want it in what I feel are lightweight calibers.
7mm-08 has me horned up, don't know how I'm going to make it thru this life without me or one of my boys having one.

I'm not sure what my 270 weighs but it's not the lightest for a mountain gun. After this season I am thinking about having some work done on it to lighten it up some. 1ak, I'm with you on the 7mm-08, wife has a Kimber 84M Classic and that thing shoots and is super light. Am thinking if I might get one then we can pack ammo for 1 caliber and cut down on weight, at least that would be my excuse to get a new rifle. Kimber Montana is what i'd like to have.

My Ruger M77 mk II compact rifle in 7-08 with scope and sling weighs in at 7 lbs 12.3 oz. This is a bit on the heavier-than-desired side so; I'll probably have to look at getting a lighter scope and sling and see if I can't shave as much of that weight off as possible. Ideally, I'd like this rifle to come it right at or just below 7 lbs.

I guess your Compact has a Laminate stock.... right there is a good place to cut about a lb...
My 700, 280Rem, Mountain Rifle has a Titanium takeoff, and Leupie, 3-9 Compact.... weighs 6lb 12oz.. it feels great in the hands..

No, it's not. It has the standard wood stock. Ruger claims 5.5 lbs for this rifle but, although I haven't weighed the rifle alone, I think that is being very optimistic.
Current scope is a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40. Bushnell claims 13 oz. for this scope. Again, I haven't weighed it seperate. This scope is slated for change.
Sling is an attractive braided leather deal. I believe it weighs in at about 5 ounces (again, I haven't weighed it seperate from the rifle.) It is definitely too heavy for its purpose and will be changed.
Doing the math 5.5 lbs + 13 oz + ~5 oz comes to 6 lbs. 10 oz. My postal scale however puts this rifle squarely at 7 lbs 12.3 oz. Where the extra one pound + comes from I don't know but, it does serve to punctuate the need to actually weigh your gear yourself and not take any manufacturers' specs seriously.

I don't care what sleeping bag ratings are from what manufacturer. They are all off by 20 degrees! Must be a fat boy in thermals doing those ratings....Probably sleeping with his wives in a double bag too!
