Just wondering if anyone knew of a reasonable rifle chambered for .505 Gibbs caliber. I already have a .416 Rigby and .458 Win Mag. I know CZ makes one, I'm not sure who else. Hopefully something under $2K. Would make a good fun gun to shoot. I imagine it would also work good on Rabbits too! LOL.

hmmmm, the 505 presents a few obstacles in finding a parent action. Options are fairly limited, but are available. I have a CZ in the Gibbs and like it quite a bit. They can be had for right around your $$$ amount, and provide a good shooter as-is. Every now and then someone decides to move into another project and a custom rifle pops up for sale in the classifieds.
It's a great cartridge, and fun to shoot once your first couple of vertebrae fuse!
As to rabbits, I have no hands on experience. However, the local ground squirrel population has made a drastic decline as they can run, but they can't hide from a Barnes solid....

CZ is the only company that chambers for the the Gibbs. You will have to go custom with a Granite Mountain action otherwise. I have been well pleased with mine.

Other than CZ, your best bet is to find a Rem M-30 or an Enfield action and have one built up..They make up into nice rifles..Other than that you have to buy a Magnum Mauser action and thats a ton of money to start with..Its a problem I don't have anymore, I built one and it was grim to shoot to say the least, but it just weighed 7.5 lbs..I was young and brash back in those days when it came to big bores, and I paid the price in hearing and bursitis!

Colorado, I fell for the old addage, "you carry one more than you shoot one, so recoil is not an issure" WRONG!!

Our PH in Africa had one...A great old gun, used in the big elephant culls of the 1960s. Had, according to him, a fair share of poacher's blood on its head, as well.
His only complaint was that every time he shot it, it would dislocate his finger!
He brought it along to the blind when dad went for the lion but did not have to use it, unlike his previous client, who needed it.

Sounds like a story to me. What kind of hunter, let alone PH, would keep a rifle that repeatedly dislocated their finger? Especially one meant for stopping dangerous game. Nice hairy-chested story, but a story nontheless.

Isn't the 505 longer, yet lacking in performance against the 500 jeffery?
I am not sayin it is, i have no data on them, just what i was told.

IIRC Gibbs, 525 at 2300, Jeffrey 535 at 2400. The latter being smaller in every dimension except using a .510 bullet instead of 505.

With the factory ammo of the day the 500 Jefferys was the most powerful by a tad, but in reality the 505 case is much larger and can be handloaded beyond the 500 Jefferys..I hunted buffalo with the 500s at one time but the recoil was always grim and after I ate my thumb and off set my nose a couple of times and getting my senses dulled momentarily I offed them both at some gunshow or in the Gun List...and went back to my sweet little 404 and 416..Offed my double in 500 N.E and .470 for a 450-400 and thats where I stay these days..I still have bursitis and according to my sawbones the big bores probably caused that and my loss of hearing.

Ever since I read Shoemaker's article about building a 505 I've wanted one. I even picked up a single round that sits on my rifle curio shelf to tempt me every now and again. SO far as close as I've come is a 50 cal blank sitting in my gun room closet...waiting...

Interesting how we all interpret the same words so differently. It was exactly this article detailing Phil's experiences with the 505 that cured me of the idea of wanting one. Great caliber, but I found out that my 'wimp factor' kicks in at about the top of the 458 Lott range. I too will stick in the 404 Jeff range until I start hunting T. Rexes. YMMV

It's so sad that so many of us have to learn from our own experience lol, myself included in spite of the overwhelming advice to leave my 375 H&H alone. I'm sending my 375 H&H off in two weeks to get rebored to 470 Capstick. I've already bought a box of ammo from A-Square to send along with it. After much advice from several boards to leave it alone, my youngest son (who will inherit the rifle) said: "Dad if you want it, you won't be happy until you do it, if it's too much recoil you can always sell it." It will weigh 10.5 lbs without scope so it "shouldn't" be too bad recoil wise.
Wisdom from the mouth of my youngest son ...
Chuck

I have shot a few Cape Buffalo with the Gibbs, but I loaded it down to 2050 FPS and it slammed those old bulls in the dirt like the hammer of Thor, at 2350 it did the same thing to me!
I have a full blown Custom 505 Gibbs presently that I might consider selling at a very reasonable price if anyone is interested contact me..and I'm in a trading mood also, so what have you.
