I recently picked up a Gamo Big Cat Springer (1000fps/1200 for PBAs)and was shocked at how loud it was, no way is it going to fly for a backyard gun where I live.
Would going to a less powerful springer work or do I need to go to a single pump pneumatic or CO2 to get what Im looking for? No hunting, just plinking in the backyard, 600fps will do just fine. My accuracy requirements are pretty loose, not looking to spend $400 to shoot tiny groups, minute of pie plate at 20 yards for offhand practice will do just fine.

Look at the Sheridans either the Silver or Blue Streaks may be up your alley.

Your talking about a Beman R-7. Quiet, smooth shooting, and accurate beyond belief. Do yourself a favor and get it from Straight Shooters - great to work with, shipped in a plastic hard case and double boxed after a complete cleaning and inspection. (well worth the extra $20 they charge) FWIW I also own a RWS 34P in .22 cal - a big, heavy, powerful and loud springer and a Benjamin 392 pump gun - short light 600fps and much louder than the R-7.
Here's a group I shot a while back - just rested over a sleeping bag will sitting on the floor of my basement.

I had the same issue with noise, in my hood it better be quiet. I went the route of 22 shorts, more accuracy, less noise. Old Remington 511.

Me, too. Savage 29A pump+ CCI CB longs= quiet squirrel control in semi-suburban neighborhood.

Just out of curiosity what type of a noise is it? Is it just a loud staple gun sounding noise or does it sound like a .22LR? If it's the latter there might be some oil in the barrel and causing a "dieseling" effect from the air being compressed and the oil ignites inside the barrel. I've had that happen a few times and yeah, it's rather loud.
