I need a new spinning reel. I'd like a rear drag model capable of handling 6-8 lb. test line. Any suggestions?
Thanks, GPA

I too prefer rear drag reels or the drag that Abu-Garcia placed on the reel rotors( spool body)
I am still using Abu-Gracia Cardinal 4 reels from the 1980's (1984 reel foot #) which was the first rear drag reel. Zebco was the origional importer from the 70's and they had a aluminum body.
Ebay is a good place to start.

Thanks. I, too, once had a rear drag Cardinal; got it as payment for a roof job I did. Unfortunately, it was stolen out of my truck. I'll check EBay

Pfluger and Shimano both make affordable rear drag spinning reels.

pretty much must reel manufactures make a rear drag reel of some sort. nearly all will work with your line choice too.

It is encouraging to see support for the rear-drag reels. I have long favored them in spite of the fact that the front-drag contingent views us a second-class citizens.

I now have 3 Shimano Symetre reels with the rear drag and they work great. The 1500 is probably the size you would need for 6lb test. I have 2 2500's and a 4000, and use braid on them. The fighting drag is a nice feature, particularly if you get one of those fish that makes a last ditch effort to get away at boatside.

I was a born and raised Garcia Mitchell 300 and 308 fisherman. My dad will be rolling in his grave to hear this, but I switched over to the rear drag Shimano's and never looked back. Very good reels for the money, and they just never break, no matter how bad you treat them.

Me too on the Mitchell 300 and 308. First spinning reels I owned.
The Shimanos are hard to beat in any configuration, spinning or level wind. The Shimano Curado is the best bait caster I've used. I know there are more expensive ones out there but I don't see how they could be that much better.
Their service is outstanding. I damaged a Symetre spinning reel and called Shimano. I got through to a service tech immediately and advised him of the problem, which was caused by me. He said send it in with a description how damage occurred. Two weeks later I received a new reel and a note thanking me for being a customer.
