Ok, I've got one coming in 30-06 and want to rebarrel it to something else, say 35 whelen.
does anyone know what kind of barrel is on it?
I know it is like a savage and has a barrel nut, but will a savage barrel work?

I have it on good authority that the threaded shank of the Marlin is not the same as a Savage. I have no doubt that someone like E.R. Shaw or any of the other custom makeres can make you a barrel with the proper thread. If you can remove the barrel nut then it is not a problem replacing the barrel, just use a factory loaded cartridge as a go gage like the Savage guys do. If the cartridge head is the same as the parent one then it should not be a problem. If you have a 30-06 then a .35 Whelen is not a problem. I rebarreled a Savage 110 from .30-06 to .35 Whelen and it was a breeze. I feel it is only a matter of time before aftermarket stuff is available for the Marlin just like the Savages. The Marlin is in the same price range ans the Savage-Stevens models but has a much better trigger.

Got to pick one up at local Bass Pro last night... wow, I know that I am going to have to buy one now. Quality fit/finsh/bolt is great! Retail for $279... I am a huge 700 fan, but I think Marlin already has them beat on smoothness of bolt and maybe trigger. Plus the fact that it is going to be a very simple switch bbl gun, makes it even better. Trying to find one in 25-06 so that I can later do a switch bbl in 280 ackley. Can't wait somebody to offer some after market laminate stocks, shouldn't be long.

Before you get to thinking barrel swapping is a breeze remember this: you need a special wrench to remove the nut, you need a means of gripping the action, the Savage guys use an action wrench to hold the action or sometimes gripping blocks and rosin on the barrel (tougher to do) to hold the rifle while you lean on the wrench. To the best of my knowledge there are none of these to fit the Marlin. You can twist the action by applying force in the wrong place. A long bar with a hole large enough to fit over the nut with a set screw in it to fit the grooves in the nut may work (or not).Fit the set screw so it fits into a groove on the underside of the nut so if you screw up it wont show. Make it long enough to give the required torque. Plus, Marlin may use something like loctite on the barrel threads which means some heat is needed (not cherry red doofus). Often times a manly hammer is required on the wrench. As far as laminate stocks go, yeah, they are nice but heavy. The plastic stock on the Marlin is heads above the Savage plastic (except for the newer ones) and a hell of a lot stiffer and better for accuracy. A day in the woods with a heavy rifle aint fun to me, I like my lightweight plastic stock for that reason and sub-MOA accuracy in the woods isnt required, 1 1/2 inch groups at a hundred will work in the woods and be a lot better than what you get with most lever guns.

I just talked to Marlin Customer Service about the XL in .25/06.
The lady said they were having some sort of technical issue with the .25 caliber barrel rifling button and it would probably be the end of 2008 to early 2009 before any quantities of the .25/06 were shipped.
Thus far she said only about 100 .25/06's (black stock guns) had been produced and shipped.

Bear, Thanks for reporting about the .25-06 issue. I am very interested in owning one of those, if for no other reason than a loaner / bad weather rifle.
I am pretty good to go on .270 and .30-06, so for varmint smashing, and the occasional deer, a .25-06 is the one.
Thanks again, CT

I've looked at the XL 7's in .270 and .30/06 and really like the rifles but between myself and my dad we already have about a dozen assorted .270's and .30/06's so I don't need any more.
I plan on buying a .25/06 if they ever hit the selves for use as a knock around varmint/deer gun.
