The model 55 is a rare variation of the model 94, not a name change. I hunted with a farmer when I was young who inherited his father's. Back in the 1980's I think it was worth a grand... I bet it's worth A LOT MORE now.

Yes, very collectable. I would look at restoring the stock and carefully/lightly cleaning the metal. Might want to consider sending this off to Doug Trunbull - he could do a full restore on it and you'd get every penny back that you put into it should you ever sell it - though I'd hope you'll keep it as an heirloom.

This gun will never be sold, by me at least. For better or worse, I took it unto myself to refinish the stock as best I could, and it's turned out fairly decent I think. I was also thinking about refinishing the metal, as it will never leave the family, so collector value isn't necessarily of great importance.
Does Doug have a website or is there somewhere I could see his work?

I have one also. Mine has a nickel steel barrel and I assume your's does too. Be careful who you get to reblue the rifle because the nickel steel will come out purple or plumb colored.
Thanks, Bill

Bill,
Yep, mine has the nickel steel barrel, too. What exactly causes the nickel steel to come out purple/plum colored?

As OSAK said. I think the high nickel content does not take to bluing as well as the regular gun steel. Model 12 pumps with nickel steel barrels do the same thing. Very few gunsmiths can get the receiver and barrel bluing to match on a Model 55. Thanks...Bill.

[Is there much of a collector value to this gun, if any at all?]
It was worth $1500-$2000, before you "refinished" the stock, seriously reducing the value.
Unless done by a nationally regarded professional like Turnbull, guns like that are best left alone.

Well, I suppose I should've started this thread before I stained the stock. However, any collector value it did or didn't have is fairly insignificant, as I don't plan to sell it ever. I knew messing with the original finish would probably reduce its value but, I figured what the hell? My dad had told me it was probably worth some money, I was just curious as to what that may have been. Thanks everyone for the input.

I have seen only one Winchester Model 55 "in the flesh" it had lots of character, and the owner refuses to part with it.

Ranger is correct, and anything else you do will like wise reduce the value. After reblueing it will be just a shooter with no collector value. Sorry.

Fine by me. Guns are meant to be hunted with IMO, not as safe queens.

You could buy an old '94 with a decent stock and switch them and I doubt most collectors would ever know. If you're never selling it, it doesn't matter anyway. I've bought and sold a lot of collectible guns too. You should've left it alone, but what's done is done. Shoot it and love it and remember the relative you got it from. Nice old gun.

Scorpian,
You know...I'm sure Doug Turnbull charges a good buck to do a restoration but I would see what it costs for the most simple job. Stock and metal...nothing fancy. After all, it is a family heirloom that you don't want to sell so a good investment of Turnbull's work for a fine working gun may be worth while for the long haul.
I agree, safe queens should be flipped for a profit and real guns are meant to be hunted with. Enjoy the rifle and create new memories hunting with it.

How to make a nice restored $400 gun from an old original Winchester that was worth only $2000. So you can hunt with it?

You may not ever plan on selling it but maybe one of your kids down the road will. Maybe they will be in dire need of money and they will take it in to sell it and the guy will give him a couple hundred instead of a couple thousand.
Plus, even more important, IMHO, is to keep it original if it was your fathers. Why would you want to get rid of all the nicks and wear? To me if these were put in there by my father by honest hunting there is no way that I would "restore" it and get rid of them.

It was my pap's gun, I inherited it when he died in 1999. I doubt the majority of its wear was from hard hunting. There weren't many nicks on it, the varnish was mainly peeling off. I realize that I probably should have left it original, and I knew that not doing so would decrease its monetary value significantly.
Sometime in the future, when I actually have a job other than being a student, I'd like to have something professionally done. I hope I can afford something like a Turnbull restoration, as that man does beautiful work. I absolutely love case colored hardening, too.
Also, unless my son or daughter becomes a drug addict, I hope they are never in dire need of monetary funds and I hope to do my part to assure they are never in that situation before I die.
