What I want to see is Smaller SUVs available with decent diesel engines..
examples: Ford Escape.. with a 4 cylinder 3000 CC, turbo Diesel
in Europe, you can purchase a Toureg by VW with a 5 cylinder Turbo Diesel... why can't we get those here????
a turbo diesel in a 4 Runner would be great also...
folks still have the bad taste of the lousy GM/Olds Diesels of the early 1980s...

Audi has a diesel SUV available and seems to be working hard in this direction. IIR they even have a 12 cylinder diesel sports car.

Ford is supposed to release a small diesel engine in the 09 F150 and the Jeep Liberty has the option, but you'll pay h____ to find one. I saw one on the lot while I was looking at trucks and the thing sold while I was there. The salesman said they can't keep the diesel models on the lot.

Unfortunately the U S of A is currently a second world country in terms of its auto market due to the dollars decline. The chances of seeing any small diesel engines in an SUV are slim to none in the short term. The world's auto makers are producing and selling as many small diesels as they can(they are all made outside the US.) It would be insane for them to sell/offer them in the US for half the going price of what they can charge in Europe/rest of the world. The same applies for the most part with the Toyota/Ford Hybrid Batteries. Ford would actually be doing much better if it was allowed by Toyota(who owns the patents for the hybrid system that they developed seperately, but got the patents first) to get more batteries for its Escape/Mariner hybrids, but they can be sold overseas for a much higher profit.

You can get a Toureg TDI over here, but it's a twin turbo V-10. I'd like to see the Toyota Hilux sold stateside, but it isn't going to happen.

A 4cyl diesel in a 4x4 Ford Ranger would be a good deal as well.
We have a bunch of 6cyl 2x4 Rangers at work and those things are absolute pigs on gas for the size of them. They only get 24mpg and that with Imperial gals, not US.

The Grand Cherokee and the Mercs are the only SUVs currently available with the diesels. The new EPA fuel mileage tests are really hitting diesels hard. The EPA's mileage is well below what is being found in the real world. Some of the auto companies (esp. VW) have been protesting the protocols as obviously flawed. Your only hope for a diesel in the near term(under 5 years) is VW or Mahindra (if they ever get their small diesel EPA approved). The manufacturers make SO MUCH MORE money selling the diesels in Europe versus what they would be able to charge for them here(and they are at full capacity), that it makes no sense to make the necessary emissions changes for the US market. A couple of the big diesel engine makers developed smaller diesels for light truck/auto applications in the mid-late 90's but they had absolutely no takers in the industry( IIRC Detroit Diesel was one of them , can't recall the others right now.)

There are lots of Jeep Grand Cherokee diesels on http://www.autotrader.com. For example, Stillwater Motors in Stillwater, MN, has 2 used 2007 GC Limiteds, 1 red and 1 silver, with about 30 miles on them for $32K. Even better, Speedway Motors in Lansing, KS, has a 2007 with 17 miles on it for $30K.
When I was looking at them last year, there was a dealer in the Ashville, NC, area who was selling new Limited 4x4s for around $33K and they would pay for your airline ticket from wherever you were to wherever they are.
