Just wondered what your thoughts were on returning to running regular oil after running synthetic. I know you get more miles between changes with synthetic, but I still think it would be cheaper using regular (less expensive) oil, and changing it every 3000/4000 miles than to pay the extra expense of synthetic. The last time I had my oil changed, it was at the dealership where I bought my truck. They didn't tell me, nor did they ask if I wanted synthetic in my truck. The bill for the oil change was $84.00. I about went through the roof. The first time they changed it they used regular oil and charged me $38.00. Also would changing back be bad on the engine? Your thoughts would be appreciated.. Thanks....

I supply my own AMS oil and my dealer just charges me for the labor and oil filter. The dealers charge up to $10 per quart for synthetic, and I pay about $6.40 per quart for the AMS.I will never go back to mineral oil, especially since I live in a cold climate.

I have Wal-Mart change my oil, Mobil 1 5-30 from Nov-Mar and 10-40 High Milage from Apr-Oct, for about $50. I run the oil 6,000+/- miles between oil changes and since I have had good success with this protocol, I'm not changing! I think that a good full synthetic, like Mobil 1, is worth the extra cost because of the additional protection that it provides. I had a water pump fail and dropped all of the coolant, making the engine run very hot for at least 10 minutes. After I had the water pump and thermostat replaced, I had the oil changed, just 'cause, and it was flowing fine, despite the high heat. I think that dino oil might have stopped flowing and that I would have incurred some engine damage.
While using Mobil 1 might cost more over the course of time, I think that the per mile difference is very small and worth the peace of mind that running the best gives to me.

I wouldn't let Walmart change the cap on the valve-stem of my bicycle.... Those idjits damn near killed me by replacing two pickup radials with bias ply tires. Blowouts when fully loaded at 70 mph in snow are no fun.... JMO, Dutch.

I make it a point to watch them do the work, if for no other reason to be sure that they put the correct oil into the engine, and to check under the hood before I start the engine. They once wanted to change by dirty K&N filter, which would have been quite a trick, since that Jeep had a Filter-Charger kit installed and replacement filters were selling for around $50. I doubt that any Wal-Mart carrys those replacement filters.

Changing back won't hurt a thing.
You can swap back and forth to your hearts content.
I run 5w-40 synthetic in the Winter and 15w-40 dino in the Summer.

I've ran valveline oil in my 98' ford f-150 5.4 ltr. until it hit 125K miles then changed over to mobil 1 [their truck -suv oil]. I rarely ever checked my oil b/c everytime i ever changed it i poured the old oil back in the jug and it was an immeasurable amount gone.Take 5 qts out put 5 qts in -until i went to the mobil 1 -ran it 4,000 miles and it was 1 3/4 qts low ? Anybody have any idea why ?
I put mobil 1 in again -and i'm keeping a close eye on it -if it uses mobil 1 -i'll switch back to mineral .

It's common for older engines to use more oil. Mobile 1 is thinner so it gets through the worn and loose seals, etc, easier. The rings are worn so more gets by them to the cylinders, too.
