Hi. I love reloading ( .357 mag, .44 mag, 30-06, 270, 30-30, 300 wsm)and am interested in T/C encore pistols. From reading about them on here and other places they sure seem like a lot of fun. I am just curious how to start. I'm pretty sure at some point I will have to head over to the local gun store and purchase the frame? or receiver? of the encore pistol with a background check. I am hoping the barrels do not require the background check so I can just order them online without all the paperwork and the headache. Any info on this or on where the best online places with best prices for barrels and accessories would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You are correct, the frame is the "firearm" part. Barrels and stocks can be ordered over the net without the background check.

Ed's TCs and Gunbroker are good places to start. I got a NIB Contender carbine barrel in .30-30 AI for $160 last year off Gunbroker. MidwayUSA and Midsouthshooters are good for factory barrels.

I like to hit local gun shows and hole in the wall gun shops for used barrels.

I have two frames. I have a factory barrel in 308 Win 15". Also a Tc Custom shop 15" in 260 Rem and a custom barrel 15" in 708 Rem and 223 Rem. Rifle barrels in 243 Win, 7mm08 Rem and 338-06. Favorates are the 308 Win handgun, the 708 Handgun and the 708 Win barrel. All are Sub MOA shooters with most any load.

Good Luck.

So can you buy the frame and register it as a handgun or a rifle?

Nope,

When the frame is manufactured it must be designated as either a rifle or handgun frame before it leaves the factory. You are in violation of federal law if you install a barrel shorter than 16" on a rifle frame. You can put a long barrel on the handgun frame but not the other way around.

some states vary on the Encore on whether it is first a pistol, then a rifle, vice versa, and other scenarios. check the laws.

Not a to be a pain, but just be cautious

So what you're saying is that if you plan on getting a T/C rifle you would be better off buying the frame seperate and buying it as a handgun?

Good Lord, here we go again... A frame is a frame is a frame. Mine happened to have a pistol barrel on it first, so I'm covered, but there is no way to know which barrel was on it first. As for the registration at the factory, I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm not trying to start an argument, but I have yet to see any documentation about that, just hearsay.

My new pro-hunter frame came as a pistol. the first letter in the serial # is P is that something new or just a Kawinkydink?
my other two encore frames just have plain serial#s
Maybe this to help law enforcment gain revenue from my potentially illegal activities? when the gun is assembled you cannot read the serial # They would need to have a pretty good reason to take my gun apart (or make me take it apart) to see the serial #

All you have to do is look it up on ATF.Gov they will also mail the federal regs to you for the asking.

A call to TC customer service will usually provide the necessary information as to the original configuration.

Man guys I wouldnt sweat it! just buy whatever barrel you want and slap it on the thing......your making it too difficult for yourself.
If you use it in the rifle config just dont put a barrel less than 16" on it thats all.

AMEN !!!

This issue has been through the Supreme Court with all of the federal idiots of the BATF in attendance. Don't you think that if it were an issue of law violation that it would be posted in GIANT LETTERS spelled out on T/C's website?!
